This past Friday and Saturday, members of the Appling County High School wrestling team traveled to Morrow to compete in the GHSA State Individual Wrestling Competition. During the event, ACHS Wrestler Bryson Thornton beat all of his competition in the 106 weight class to bring home a State Championship to Appling County in the AA state.
This is the first time in many years, that Appling County has brought home a State Championship in wrestling. There were 16 wrestlers in the competition, and Thornton beat wrestlers from Rutladge High School, Redan High School, Murry County High School, and took on a wrestler from Franklin County High School in the Championship match. Thornton won his first round match and his semifinal match both with pins, and won his quarterfinal match by a score of 11-5. The chamionship match went all three periods and Bryson won by a score of 15-8. He took the lead early in the championship by racking up 10 points in the first period with a takedown and two nearfalls. In the second round, Bryson chose to start in the top position, and got four points from a nearfall early in the round. The wrestler from Franklin County was able to close the 14 point deficate a little with a reversal that lead to giving him two points. Thronton was able to escape and get one point from that, and the Franklin wrestler was able to get three points before the end of the match with a take down.
Heading into the final period, the Franklin wrestler had the choice, and chose to start in the top position like Thornton did in the second period. The Franklin wrestler was able to get three more points with about one minute left in the match, but those were the only points he was able to get in the third period. Bryson walked away with the championship.
Congratulations to Bryson Thornton on this great accomplishment, and for representing Appling County very well at state.
