On September 24, a Centennial Celebration was held. This celebration was to recognize and honor Baxley residents 100 years old, or older. The event was held at the Progressive Resource Center.
Five ladies were recognized for their achievement. Susie Buxton (100), Bessie Conaway (100), Agnes Sellers (101), Marie Ellis (103), and Gertrude Gamble (103) were honored for not only their longevity, but more so for their love and commitment to their families, their devotion to teaching others, their obedience to their Heavenly Father, and for the way they have carried themselves throughout the time here on earth. Unfortunately, Ms. Buxton was unable to attend.
A wonderful ceremony was held with Mistress of Ceremonies Minister Mary Ogden beginning the evening with some kind words for the ladies being honored. A prayer was given, followed by a Scripture reading from sister Almaree Miller. Sister Tommie Jones welcomed everyone and led those in attendance in the congregation hymn, “Down Through the Years”.
Many folks in attendance spoke kind words and reflections for the ladies being honored and a terrific meal was given. More singing took place and Pastor James Hayes closed the evening with prayer.
