JACQUELYN “JACKIE” HERRINGTON

Jacquelyn “Jackie” Herrington of Appling County passed away May 23, 2026, after a brief illness. She was born in Hazlehurst on August 19, 1947, to Barney and Emma Cain.
Jackie grew up on a farm in the Zoar Community of Appling County, where she was surrounded by love in a home filled with seven sisters and one brother. The close emotional bonds formed with her siblings during her early years have lasted a lifetime. She was baptized in the family pond when she was 12 years old.  She was a lifelong member of Zoar Baptist Church, where she taught children’s Sunday School, sang in the choir, and served as Church Clerk for 39 years.  She considered members of the church as her extended family.
Her family doesn’t know if her career choice was from a desire for quiet or from a love of books, but she spent all her professional years working in a library. She was a librarian at the small Appling County Library located next to the courthouse in the early 70’s before moving to the library of Baxley Elementary. When the new school was opened in 1974, and Baxley Elementary School became Appling Primary, the library became the Media Center, and she changed with the times, keeping up with all the technology advances.  She worked there for 30 years until her retirement in 2004.  She enjoyed her career working with children and made lifelong friends among her co-workers.
After her retirement, Jackie enjoyed spending time tending to the beautiful, colorful flower garden by her patio.  She shared her love of flowers with her family.  Her love of nature extended to the breathtaking sunrises and sunsets at her home on Lake Mayers that she captured on her phone and shared with family.  Inside her home, she enjoyed planning and decorating, keeping everything updated.  She loved reading and baking.  Her Red Velvet Cake and pecan pies were celebrated additions to any occasion.  She loved visiting with people in her community and sharing the bounty of her baking/cooking. She loved sewing – creating beautiful clothing for herself, family, and others in the community.  She always remembered to send cards for any occasion to let others know that they were in her thoughts.  She and her sisters had many fun sister trips that were filled with laughter.
Jackie was preceded in death by her parents, William Barney and Emma Cain, and one sister, Pat Hayes.
Jackie will be remembered for her quiet strength and devotion to her family.  She deeply loved her children and grandchildren and took great joy in keeping up with their lives.  She was a prayer warrior for her family and community.  She will be greatly missed by her husband of 61 years, Robert Herrington; two daughters, Sylvia Holler (Robert) and Melanie (Jason) Gilbertson; 5 grandchildren, Hank Allen, Cole (Amanda) Conner, Katherine Conner, Carson Holler and Addison (Garrett) Jones; 1 great-grandson, Behr Conner; 6 sisters, Bonnette Smith, Sandra Miles, Kay (Larry) Smith, Shirley (Tommy) Phillips, Debbie (Tony) Stewart, Cathy (Dale) Atkins; 1 brother, William (Toni) Cain. A Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at 11:00 A.M. at Zoar Baptist Church, with the Reverend Virginia Herrington, Reverend Justin McLellan, and Reverend Alan Stalvey officiating.
Visitation was held one hour before the service.
Interment followed in the Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Hank Allen, Cole Conner, Carson Holler, Andy Atkins, Ashley Atkins, Billy Butler, Blake Cain, Cain Smith, Danny Causey, Jeff Herrington, Robert Cain, and Travis Stewart.
Nobles Funeral Home was honored to serve the family of Mrs. Jacquelyn (Jackie) Cain Herrington.
