I cringe when I hear a politician say the above statement. They like to brag and act like they are doing us property taxpayers a favor. How about reducing the millage rate? I believe that would make a property owner happy, including me.
While the statement above could be true, what politicians fail to say is…“We have not raised millage, but we have certainly reassessed/increased your property values in order to collect more taxation.”
As property owners in Appling County are very much aware, for the past several years we have witnessed our property values increase, considerably in some cases. If you missed the five-year histories published in last week’s issue of The Baxley News-Banner, Real and Personal property values have increased to $1,748,727,584.00 (that’s billion) after reevaluations. That’s an increase of $384,624,726.00 over 2024 and over $700,000,000.00 since 2020 (according to the Appling County Commissioners five-year history).
Did I mention our county governments also started receiving almost $3,000,000.00 in new ad valorem taxation/revenue annually from Plant Hatch in 2020 as a part of an agreement with MEAG (MEAG owns 17.7% of Plant Hatch)? However, we witnessed very little decrease in millage as a result of these new revenues.
I think most of the community would strongly agree…we hope to see a substantial millage reduction by our elected government officials next week.
