When I was little, I used to spend hours staring at the ocean, fascinated by the mystery of marine life. That passion has grown with me, and today, at 17 years old, I’m proud to volunteer with the Environmental Youth Leadership Program at the Georgia Aquarium. This experience has not only taught me about marine science, but also about leadership, responsibility, and service.

Learning Through Service
As a volunteer, I assist aquarium staff with programs that teach visitors about ocean conservation and the importance of protecting marine life. I get to interact with families and children, helping them understand why sharks, sea turtles, and other animals matter to our world. It feels good knowing that my role helps inspire others to care about the environment.
Developing Leadership Skills
The program has pushed me to become a stronger communicator and leader. Standing in front of groups of people and explaining scientific concepts wasn’t easy at first, but I’ve learned to be confident and clear. I also work as part of a team with other youth leaders, which has taught me collaboration and accountability.
Why It Matters
Marine life is at risk because of pollution, climate change, and human activity. Through this program, I’ve realized that even small actions—like reducing plastic use or volunteering in your community—can make a big impact. I hope to continue this work as I pursue my dream of becoming a marine biologist focused on shark research.
Advice for Students
For other high school students, my advice is simple: follow your passion and look for opportunities to serve. Whether your interest is in animals, art, sports, or technology, there’s a way to turn it into something meaningful. Volunteering not only builds your skills but also opens doors to future careers.
Being part of the Georgia Aquarium’s Environmental Youth Leadership Program has been one of the best experiences of my life. It reminds me every day that young people can make a difference in protecting our planet.
