I recently wrote an article about Mother’s Day honoring our mothers, so since this past Sunday was Father’s Day, I could not leave out the fathers.
There is a meme that goes around right before Father’s Day with a picture of a pair of holey underwear saying “Hang on Dads, Father’s Day is almost here.” The meme is implying that the Daddy’s have to make do with the worn out underwear till Father’s Day when they will be gifted a new pair. While that is a funny meme, there is a lot of underlying truth through humor.
I could not help but notice that the church was not nearly as full for Father’s Day as it was on Mother’s Day. When I came down from playing the piano and sat down beside my son Jasper, he said the Dads are the peasants compared to the moms on Mother’s Day. I had to agree with him and that thought made me sad.
The fathers play such an important role as the patriarchs of the family and the head of the house. God’s design for family is God above all, the father at the head and the mother with him, then the children, which puts everyone under the covering of the father. The father is the provider and the protector, among many other things to the family.
I believe in keeping the timeless traditions. Just like with Mother’s Day when we honor the older matriarch of the family, I believe in doing the same on Father’s Day. Then, the torch will be passed to the next generation instead of “Well, it is my Father’s Day too.” I was blessed with a wonderful Daddy who would wear rags and holey underwear if he had to do so to make sure we were well provided for. He was and still is the shining example of Christ’s love for the church in his love for our family. We children had complete trust that if he said something was going to be ok that it would be and we need not worry.
All good fathers do this for their families. They carry a load, and the lack of honor that is given on Father’s Day is heartbreaking, and that is the way the county is turning.
Society wants us to think that a strong, masculine male is toxic, but God designed men to be that way to fulfill their role in the family. God’s design for family and humanity as a whole is perfect and does not need tampering with.
With Father’s Day having come and gone, let us not forget the importance and need for the Dads in our lives. I am so grateful to still have my Daddy with us on this side of heaven.
If you still have your Daddy, honor him every day, not just one day a year. Make sure he is not wearing the holey underwear all year. That is just a joke, but the truth of the matter is still there.
