Local governments host College and Career Seminar

Students from Appling County High School visited the Courthouse Annex on Thursday, March 27, as part of the College and Career Seminar program to learn about careers in local government.

County Manager Reid Lovett opened the program and spoke to the classes about the different career options within the county government.

Deputy Gene Davis talked about career opportunities through the Sheriff’s Office and stressed the importance of making good choices, especially on social media services like Snapchat. Deputy Davis stressed that many of those in jail are not bad people, but are good people who made a bad choice, and encouraged the class to make smart decisions that will shape their futures.

County road department manager Carroll Weaver discussed potential job choices for ourdoor lovers, encouraging those with an interest in heavy machinery to explore simulations like those at Coastal Pines. Weaver said his line of work is very rewarding.

City manager Keri Orvin discussed the different jobs within city government, such as biology and engineering.

Afterwards, the group completed an exercise with Davis and Orvin presenting mock requests to the board of students, who voted on the proposals.
