MERITA BECKWORTH OSWALD

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Merita Beckworth Oswald, who passed away peacefully on the morning of Saturday, July 4, 2026, at the age of 77.
Born on January 8, 1949, in Baxley, Merita was one of 13 children born to the late Abraham and Lola Crosby Beckworth. She was known for her strong work ethic, kind heart, and unwavering devotion to her family and faith. Merita retired after many years as a scheduler with Hillsborough Area Regional Transit. She took great pride in her work and formed lasting friendships throughout her career. Outside of work, she found joy in tending her flower and vegetable gardens, preparing delicious meals for family and friends, traveling, and participating in the many activities of Bonaire Church, where she loved attending. One of her favorite daily traditions was taking leisurely golf cart rides around the neighborhood with her beloved husband, Lonnie. Those who knew Merita will remember her willingness to lend a helping hand. While she could be quiet at first, once you got to know her, she was so much fun to be around. She had a gift for making others feel welcome and cared for, and her kindness touched countless lives.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Christine Oxendine, Juanita Pohl, Clementine Schulze, Janice Yee, and June Beckworth; and her brothers, Abraham, Willis, and Jerry Beckworth.
Merita’s memory will forever be treasured by her loving husband of 26 years, Lonnie Bruce Oswald of Bonaire; her children, Shane Walden and Crystal Windfeldt; her brother, Henry Ford Beckworth; her sisters, Myrtle Hogbin, Beverline Walters, and Janie Grace Jenkins; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of extended family members, dear friends, and all whose lives were enriched by knowing her. Though her presence will be deeply missed, the love, faith, kindness, and beautiful memories she shared will remain in the hearts of those who loved her forever.
Visitation with Merita’s family was held Saturday, July 11, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Bonaire Church with a funeral service immediately followed at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Kevin Baker officiating.
Merita was laid to rest in Beckworth-Swinson Cemetery in Appling County at 5:00 p.m. the next day, Sunday, July 12, 2026.
McCullough Funeral Home in Warner Robins & Swain Funeral Home in Baxley had the privilege of being entrusted with these arrangements.
