FEY CARTER HARDY

1934 – 2026
It is with sadness and gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the loss of Fey Carter Hardy 92, who passed away on July 4, 2026, in Augusta. Born on July 2, 1934, in Surrency, Fey was the only daughter of Langford Carter and Bessie Kennedy Carter both of whom preceded
her in death. She is also preceded in death by two brothers, John Carter and Langford Carter. Fey was married to Arthur Searle Hardy of Baxley, and they raised two children, Art and Andrea.
A precocious child filled with curiosity, determination, and a keen intellect, Fey pursued education throughout her life. Following graduation from high school, she attended Georgia Southern College graduating with a degree in Early Childhood education. Her belief that all children deserve to learn, that all children can learn became her mantra. Fey earned her Masters degree from the University of Georgia while teaching and raising a family. Her career began in the kindergarten classroom and progressed to school principal. Throughout a decades-long career, her philosophy remained centered on putting children first and ensuring that education was accessible to all. She was instrumental in the acquisition of computers for every school in Richmond County, and, with her usual determination, guided the process through programming to instruction. Until her retirement as a school principal, her innovative ideas
continued to be valuable within the Richmond County school system.
For many years, Fey was a faithful member of First Baptist Church. She treasured her Sunday School class, her church family, and the opportunities to serve, sharing her flowers and designing countless flower arrangements for church events. Her visits to family, friends, and neighbors always included a basket of peaches, a small gift, a newspaper clipping, or a bouquet of flowers from her garden or her “pass along plants.”
Fey had many interests and talents. She acquired certification as a Master Gardener after retirement. Known as the “hydrangea lady” and well-loved as mentor to many novice gardeners, Fey donated and planted hydrangeas at the Appleby Library while a member of the Friends of the Augusta Library. She was an active volunteer for the Pendleton King Park Foundation for many years. With characteristic enthusiasm and energy, she was an active member of the Georgia Association of Educators, the Retired Educators Association, an initial member of the Mariposa Book Club, the Morris Museum of Art, and many other organizations.
During her extraordinary life, Fey’s faith and strength brought her through the tragic loss of her husband, son, and daughter. Her son, Art Hardy, a neonatal respiratory therapist, lost his life in a medical transport plane crash while en route to the MCG medical center. Her daughter, Andrea, lived with medical challenges from childhood but was a graduate of Augusta Christian School, an active community volunteer, and a joyful friend to countless people.
After Fey’s career in the school system, she and her daughter traveled extensively in the United States and many other countries. They especially loved driving the backroads of her native Georgia. Fey was an avid reader, amateur sculptor and artist, fascinating story-teller, and family historian for the Georgia Kennedy and Carter families.
Fey is survived by her niece, Lisa Mohar Ciotoli (Jack) of Canton; her three nephews, John Mohar (Jeannie) of San Antonio, Texas, Steven Mohar (Elizabeth) of Canton, and David Mohar (Tracy) of Flower Mound, Texas; cousin John Milton Carter of Glennville; cousin Ann Hamner
Miller of Charlotte, North Carolina; cousin Brenda Thomas Plant of Atlanta; cousin Sandra Hart Wade (Harry) of Augusta; cousins Melanie Wade Larsen (Tom) and Catherine Wade Wahl (Phil) of Augusta; and numerous relatives and friends.

To honor Fey’s wishes, there will not be a funeral service. To all of Fey’s many friends, please remember her with joy and gratitude for the impact she had on our lives.
