When we think of a dirt road, it is usually negative. Most people think of rough bumps, dust and mud when it rains. I do not think of it that way. I was reminded of an old country song sang by Sawyer Brown. They are a country group that sang a song titled, The Dirt Road. It says “Daddy worked hard for his dollar, He said some folks don’t but that’s ok, but they won’t know which road to follow because an easy street might lead you astray. I’ll take the dirt road it’s all I know. I’ve been walking it for years it’s gone where I need to go. It ain’t easy, it ain’t supposed to be, so I’ll take my time and life won’t pass me by ‘cause it’s right there to find on the dirt road.” It goes on to talk about life in the fast lane and when it’s all said and done the time we have is borrowed and to make sure your headed the right way.
The time we have on earth truly is borrowed and limited. I wrote an article a while back on the gift of growing old. It really is a privilege many do not get. When you take the dirt road of life it is slower, bumpier, and seemingly rougher than the fast lane of the easy street. We get so caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life that we forget to slow down and appreciate the little things. Our lives now are more fast paced than ever. There are very few sit at the table family meals. Everybody is on the run thinking they must be here or there. When it is all said and done, and you look back on your life you will see that most of that was not important. It is the simple things in life that are most important. People think they must portray a more glamorous image of life to appear like they have it all together.
With social media taking center stage, maintaining an image has become top priority for many. What is really important is family, helping others, and all the simple things in life. As simple as some us try and make our paths, they will come with obstacles. There will always be rocks in that old dirt road of life, but you can choose to make them steppingstones instead of stumbling blocks. It all depends on how you use them. Always remember most things start working again after you unplug them for a while and plug it back up, and that includes people. Sometimes we need to unplug for a while and sit on that old dirt road to clear our minds. As far as the dirt road is concerned, I will do like the song says and take the dirt road because it has always gone where I need to go. While it is not the easy path, it makes sure I am headed the right way.
