New 4-H leader hired in Appling

Julie Bacon has been hired as the new 4-H leader in Appling County and is imminently steeped in 4-H through her own experiences. Growing up in Reidsville, she started her years of personal participation in fifth grade and did everything available to her until she graduated. She also did a lot on the state and district level, serving on the Southeast Board of Directors and then on the State Board of Directors. Julie was a member of Tattnall’s first archery team as well as on the shooting sports team. She competed at state congress for three years.
“Even though I didn’t win, it was a wonderful experience for me,” Julie said.

Julie comes from a family of 4-Hers, including her mom, and aunt, her grandmother and great-grandmother. Her destiny was 4-H, or so it seemed. Graduation didn’t stop her involvement either. She found ways to stay involved. She worked with summer camp at Rock Eagle for three years and volunteered in different counties to help however she could. She holds a degree from UGA’s College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences.

For most of her years in 4-H, her leader was Rachel Stuart; Leslie Garrett did the last two years of high school. These two ladies really impacted her life.
“I have a passion for rural life and 4-H,” she said, “so I feel like I’m in the right place.”

She also enjoys gardening with her grandma. “Grandma can grow anything,” Julie said. “I have a long way to go to reach her level, but I’m learning.”

Welcome to Appling County, Julie. May your years as a leader in 4-H be as pleasant as your first years.
