Joseph Henry Devereaux

 

Joseph Henry “Joe” Devereaux, 83, of Surrency passed away Saturday, May 3, 2025 at his residence under the care of Hospice of South Georgia and surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Devereaux was born April 14, 1942 in Surrency to the late Gus Devereaux and the late Henrietta Ridgedill Devereaux. Joe graduated in 1959 from Surrency High School and retired from CXS Railroad in 1991. He lived in Waycross for 30 years before retiring to Surrency and his old home place to live out the remaining years of his life. He is preceded in death by a brother, Doyle Devereaux; sister, Janice Sisson; and his first love and mother of his children, Carolyn Turner Devereaux.

Survivors include his wife, Freda Gibbs Devereaux of Surrency; daughters, Jolene (Doug) Quick of Waycross and Ramona Devereaux of Waycross; son, Dan (Suzanne) Devereaux of Surrency, two brothers, Olvid Devereaux of Surrency and Bryant Devereaux of Forsyth; special nephew, Travis (Sally) Gibbs; special great nieces, Ellafair “Punkie” Bicik, Jaymi Gibbs, and Jaci Gibbs; and special great nephew, Memphis Bicik. One grandson, Patrick Robert Mobley; three great-grandsons, Patrick Theron Mobley, Ethan Blake Mobley, and Brendan Turner Mobley; great-granddaughter, Annabella Faith Mobley, and best friend, Emmette Gibbs, also survive.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 7, 2025 at 3:00 PM in the Chapel of Swain Funeral Home with Rev. Darrell Smith officiating. Interment followed in Devereaux Family Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Travis Gibbs, Charlie Gibbs, Emmette Gibbs, Justin Carter, Aaron Carter, Paul Williams, and Memphis Bicik.

Honorary pallbearers were Sherry Carter, Yvette Carter, Art Pearson, Morgan Yawn, Mashia Harris, Mendy Stephens, Heather Mims, James Johnson, Vinis Mims and staff of Hospice of South Georgia.

Musical selections were rendered by Debbie Taylor.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
