Betty S. Sparks

Betty S. Sparks, 84, of Baxley passed away Sunday, March 16, 2025 at Twin Oaks Nursing Home in Alma.

Ms. Betty, as she was known to many, was born September 16, 1940 in Pitts, Georgia to the late Danny E. Simmons and the late Laura Bell Simmons.  She moved to Atlanta at 18 where she met Gene Sparks.  They married and built a life together in Douglasville, GA.  They raised two children, were involved in the Georgia Retardation Association, Betty was a teacher’s aide and then she went on to manage the Good Samaritan Center.  Betty enjoyed their church communities and lifelong friendships made at County Line Baptist and Grace Church. After retiring in Baxley, she and Gene found a welcoming home at Satilla Baptist Church and continued as members of the Gideons International Auxiliary. She always enjoyed spending time in her garden and in her kitchen.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Sparks, Jr. and a daughter, Susan Sparks.

Survivors include her son, Ken (Mara) Sparks of Chicago, IL; and two grandchildren, Henry (Bethany) Sparks and Nathan Sparks, both of Chicago, IL.

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 5, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Swain Funeral Home with Rev. Scottie Pitts officiating. Interment followed in Satilla Baptist Church Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
