Betty Sue Herndon Daniel, 92, of Surrency passed away very peacefully early Friday morning, October 10, 2025 holding her son Jack and best friend Glenda Ruhnau’s hands. Her eyes wide open, she went silently and very gently to be with her Lord. For several months she had been under the loving care of Altamaha Health Care, followed by Hospice of South Georgia. Her personal caregivers: Tammy Hutcheson, Lee Green, Lori Futch, Sheri Goode, her son Jack and Glenda Ruhnau provided constant companionship and loving care in these last days.
Mrs. Daniel was born July 27 1933 in Appling County to the late John Herndon and the late Ruth Mann Herndon. She was preceded in death by her husband of almost 60 years, Dr. Julian W. Daniel. She was a very dedicated, devoted and loving wife to this man which she loved and cherished. Mrs. Daniel was also preceded in death by brothers and sisters: John C. (Bud) Herndon, Edith Vitello, Curtis Herndon and Thel Riggs.
Survivors include her son, Jack C. Daniel of Surrency, daughter, Julie Anne Daniel (Ken) Howle of Darlington, SC and one brother Sampson Herndon, also of Surrency. Sue, Mama Sue, as she was known to all these, had 6 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. A number of nieces and nephews are also a part of her quiver.
Sue, as everyone knew her, was a loving, full-time mother and homemaker. She enjoyed watching her birds, squirrels and neighborhood cats from her mirrored glass sitting area; always pondering what they were up to and where they were going or had come from. Sue also enjoyed her flowers; especially roses; watching all her plants grow and watering them by hand. Mrs. Daniel attended Armstrong State College in her early years prior to her marriage and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Mrs. Daniel was a member of The First Baptist Church in Sylvania.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 15, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Memorial Freewill Baptist Church with Burney Riggs givint the eulogy. Interment followed in Millen, at 3:00 p.m.
Active pallbearers were Alan Howle, Alex Howle, Justin Dick, Randy Herndon and Greg Mann.
Honorary pallbearers were the members of Memorial Freewill Baptist Church.
Musical selections were rendered by Burney & Julie Riggs.
In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to Hospice of South Georgia, Inc.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
