Pickleball problem is solved
The long-awaited pickleball courts are now open for use at Max Deen Park. The construction was completed in mid-December, just in time for the new year.
Pickleball gained traction among retirees and recreational players looking for a low-impact alternative to traditional racquet sports with its compact court size, simplified rules, and emphasis on strategy over power. Today, the sport is sweeping the nation across all ages as individuals, groups, and even churches are joining in on the fun.
Pickleball can be played in singles or doubles with just a paddle and a ball. Paddles come in a range of sizes and materials, such as plastic, fiberglass, and more.
Appling County’s inaugural pickleball tournament was held in September 2023, and the community is looking forward to hosting events to come. The Max Deen Park in Baxley now holds six pickleball courts, which can accommodate 28 players at a time for large-scale, tournament-style play.
Parks and Recreation Director Timmy McGuirt says that the installation process took about a month of on-and-off work. He expects more participants in the spring and summer months when the weather is more favorable.
