Elton C. Carter, 89, of Baxley, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, October 4, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Born November 9, 1935, in Baxley, Elton was the son of Ruby Beasley. He spent his entire life in Appling County, where he was a devoted farmer and proud steward of the land. His work ethic, dedication, and love of farming left a lasting mark on his family and community.
Outside of the fields, Elton found joy in the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, enjoying countless days along rivers, lakes, and in the woods. Friends and family will remember his stories, his laughter, and the way he always found peace in nature.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruby Carter Beasley, his brothers, Billy Beasley and Raymond Beasley, and his uncle, Casper Carter.
Elton was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Donna M. Carter; children, Sharon Carter-Potter (John), Byron Carter (Shonda), stepchildren, Wesley Horne (Sheryl) and Rhonda Hollis (Guy); grandchildren, Karlee Carter, Miles Carter, Lauren Sangster (Jeff), and Sydney Haskin; step grandchildren, Kevin Horne (Emily), Ryan Horne (Brittany), Lena Davis (Joe), and Kelli Fant (Josh); and nine great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Christine Todd (Terry); sister-in-law, Linda Beasley; and special family members, Ben & Wendy Smith.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 7, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Swain Funeral Home with Rev. Gary Page officiating. Interment followed in Melton’s Chapel Church Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Miles Carter, Kevin Horne, Ben Smith, Jake Martinez, Jeff Sangster, Shane Sellers, Colby Sellers, Brandon Stone, Kael Martinez, and Kasper Martinez.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the honorary pallbearers: Randy & Sonya Williams, Mickey & Gay Stone, Mike & Wendy Sellers, James & Melanie Clark, Carroll & Janie Hand, Craig Stone, Sheri Goode, Evelyn McCall and Family, the staff of Community Hospice (especially Lynette, Marisa, and Samantha) for their love and support during this time.
Musical selections were rendered by Lauren Sangster.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Melton’s Chapel Church Building Fund (c/o Belinda Sellers 4178 Altamaha School Road Baxley, Georgia 31513).
Elton will be deeply missed by his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
