The Baxley-Appling Board of Tourism hosted the River Rat Run excursion on Saturday, July 19.

Participants floated, canoed, and kayaked the 12-mile route along the Altamaha River, departing from Towns Bluff Landing in Jeff Davis County early in the morning and stopping for lunch at Benton Lee’s steakhouse before finishing the run at Deens Landing.
Named one of the 75 Last Great Places on Earth by The Nature Conservancy, the Altamaha River winds through forests, swamps, and marshes, home to a diverse array of wildlife including egrets, deer, turkeys, turtles, and freshwater mussels.
Despite the venture being rescheduled from June due to safety concerns with river levels, the event was still a successful way to enjoy a hot summer weekend.
