Big turnout despite brisk weather for MLK Day Parade
On Monday, January 20, the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade was held in the city of Baxley. The parade ran from the Earnest J. Parker building and traveled south down U.S. 1. A great crowd was in attendance, and several business, organizations, local leaders and individuals rode in the parade. Celebrations and memorial services take place internationally each year to commemorate the history of the American Civil Rights Movement and the end of Jim Crow. King was a Georgia native, pastor, and non-violent activist who lead peaceful protests–including the Atlanta sit-ins and the March on Washington–until his assassination in March of 1968. King’s legacy is a testament to the historical fight for unity and equality regardless of skin color.
