Based on the news reported on the front page this week, local property owners should be overjoyed. The news of the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia (MEAG) tax payment is welcomed news. Nearly three million dollars in new tax revenue should benefit our community tremendously.
Now the question that should come to mind…how soon can our elected officials adjust millage based upon this newfound revenue to save local taxpayers on their property tax bills? Unfortunately, that probably should have occurred for the 2021 tax year during the fall budgeting process. Instead, local officials decided to take the wait-and-see approach to see if the new revenue would actually come in for 2020. We now know it did.
Hopefully our elected officials will not find ways to spend this new revenue. I think I speak for most Appling County property owners; we’d like to see this money go toward a reduction in millage. It will certainly be interesting to see what happens.
