Let’s talk about the Special Purpose Local Sales Tax (SPLOST). The vote to approve the 2024 SPLOST is rapidly approaching and I want to share information with you that will help you to be a more informed voter.
The SPLOST has been voted on, and approved, in Appling County since 1995. Our county, to include the City of Baxley, has realized over $65,000,000.00 in total revenue. This revenue has been used for many projects and improvements that we have all enjoyed. Without SPLOST, to complete these projects, we would have had to raise the county millage rate significantly which raises property taxes.
The SPLOST is actually funded by everyone that spends money in our county and is a penny tax on every dollar spent. Think about that; every trip to the gas station, grocery store, restaurant, or hardware store you are contributing 1% of your purchase to the SPLOST. When you buy that new truck or car, or maybe when you hire a contractor that uses local merchants for his supplies, you contribute. And what about out of town shoppers? They contribute too. There are many types of taxes but this may be the fairest of them all.
So, how does it work? Glad you asked. On January 1, 2024 one percent of every dollar you spend in Appling County will be deposited in an account. This account will remain active for 6 years. The revenue will be available for the agreed upon projects each month. The amount each organization receives, or is made available to, will vary based on the percentage agreed upon in the signed resolution. It is projected that for the life of the 2024 SPLOST we will earn approximately $3,641,000 annually. This results in an estimated total amount of $21,850,000.
This is an exciting time to live in Appling County. I am humbled, yet proud, to be a small part of the leadership for Appling County. The leaders who call Appling County home have their work cut out for them, no doubt. As a county, will we always agree? Probably not. What counts is that we all do our part to make Appling County a place we are proud to call home.
