Last Wednesday the Appling County High School Pirate and Lady Pirate cross country teams traveled to Jeff Davis Middle School to compete in the Region 1-AAA Championships. When it was all said and done, the gentlemen ran away with their third consecutive Region Championship. The squad scored a total of 41 points qualifying them for the State Meet on November 6 in Carrollton. The young ladies also qualified for state finishing third in region competition with a score of 81 points.
The boys were led by Ivan Guzman who was the overall region winner and ran one of the top five fastest times on the Jeff Davis course with a time of 16 minutes and 49 seconds (16:49). Rylan Campbell was second for the team and third overall with a time of 18 minutes and 8 seconds (18:08). Both Ivan and Rylan were named to the All-Region Team with their finishes. They were followed by Omar Cruz 10th, Jonah Galli 13th, Darren Hutcheson 14th, Juan Ramirez 15th, and Ojani Garcia 16th. The first five places gave the Pirates a score of 41 points to win the title for a third consecutive year.
Finishing third with a total of 81 points, the Lady Pirates also punched their ticket into the state competition at Carrollton. They were led by Irann Castillo who finished 7th overall in the race. Joining her at state will be Emory Alexander, Josie Gunter, Amy Loredo, Monica Saucedo, Rosio Sebastian, and Lydia Williams.
