School system still  handling COVID well

The Appling County Board of Education (BOE) met for a regular monthly meeting on November 15 at the board office located on Highway 15. Board member Dr. Areatha Virgil was not present at the meeting.

During the meeting Assistant Superintendent Dr. Sandy Dominy (filling in for Superintendent Dr. Scarlett Copeland who was not present) reported that the school system continues to show progress with regard to COVID-19. As of November 5 the school system had one student positive for COVID-19 with six students out on quarantine. The report also showed that the system had zero staff members out during the same reporting period.

Teachers of the Year

Dr. Dominy recognized the 2022-2023 Teachers of the Year for each school and the district’s Teacher of the Year. Appling County Primary School’s Teacher of the Year is Karen Tillman. Appling County Elementary School’s Teacher of the Year is Amanda Hutcheson. Appling County Middle School’s Teacher of the Year is Tasha Livingood. Appling County High School’s Teacher of the Year is Stacey Harris. Fourth District Elementary School’s Teacher of the Year is Anna Tyre. Altamaha Elementary School and the Appling County School District Teacher of the Year is Marti England. (See photo above).

Other business

The BOE recognized a number of groups for their recent accomplishments including the Region Champion Appling County High School (ACHS) Lady Pirate Volleyball Team and the State/Region Champion ACHS Lady Pirate Softball Team.

Fundraisers for the ACES Buccaneer Honor Society, ACES fifth grade, ACMS Basketball and ACHS CTI were approved by the board.

The 2022-2023 Appling County School Calendar was presented for information and will be voted upon at the BOE’s next meeting.

Board members voted to enter into an executive session for personnel purposes. Following the session, the board approved to accept the resignation of Sharon Sikes as the bookkeeper at ACPS. The board also approved hiring Amaya Roberts as a receptionist at ACES, Sheila Taylor as a paraprofessional at ACES, Amanda Washington as a paraprofessional at ACES and Angela Denton as a receptionist at ACHS. The board opened the bookkeeper position for ACPS.
