The Appling County Pirate football team started out last week playing on Monday, Oct. 3, and as previously reported, had a huge victory over region foe Pierce County 28 – 17. This victory seemed to shock many sports pundits across the state. On Friday night the team traveled over to Lyons to play the Toombs County Bulldogs. Once again, the Pirates picked up another Region 3AA victory defeating the Bulldogs 34-21.
This week the Pirates will travel to Savannah to play the Windsor Forest Knights. The game will be played at Memorial Stadium and kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
The Pirates have now jumped to as high as number four in some state polls in AA. This team is starting to really come together and many across the state are taking notice. It should also be noted that Head Coach Jordan Mullis received Coach of the Week honors this week from one organization and QB Dayson Griffis received Male Athlete of the Week honors from another organization.
Appling scored first in the game when QB Dayson Griffis connected with receiver Nehemiah Howard for a 51-yard passing touchdown. Kicker Christian Sellers added the PAT and the score was 7-0 at the 6:59 mark in the first quarter.
The Pirates were able to score again around the 6:00 mark in the second quarter. Dayson Griffis connected with Kellen Echols for an 18-yard passing touchdown. The PAT was good and the score
Toombs answered back on their next possession and was able to score on a one-yard run for a touchdown. The score was 14-7 at the 3:52 mark and would remain the same until the halftime break.
Appling hit paydirt in the third quarter, around the 5:24 mark, when runner Jaylen Johnson found an opening behind the big Pirate offensive line and darted in from three yards out. Sellers added the PAT and the score was 21-7.
With 1:30 remaining in the third quarter, Toombs was able to find the endzone again scoring on another running play. That made the score 21-14.
At the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Pirates scored again as Griffis and Echols connected again for an 11-yard touchdown pass. The PAT was blocked and it was 27-14 at the 10:19 mark.
The Pirates tacked on seven more when Jaylen Johnson scored from four yards out at the 7:59 mark in the fourth. The PAT was good and the score was 34-14.
Toombs was able to score once more before the end of the game to make the final score 34-21.

Rushing – Jamarion Williams had 13 rushes for 66 yards and Jaylen Johnson has 14 rushes for 37 yards.
Defense – William Solomon had 8 tackles, Jose Martinez had 7 tackles and 2 sacks, Dawson Griffis had 5 tackles and a half sack, Sherman Clay and DJ West had 4 tackles each, Cameron Mobley had 3 tackles, Mykel Reed had 2 tackles and a half sack, and Pendarvis Wright and Tre’Shawn Moore had 2 tackles each.
