Ira Nelson Poole, 91, of Baxley passed away Thursday, October 1, 2020.

Mr. Poole was born December 12, 1928 in Appling County to the late William Taff Poole and the late Mamie Lou Shipes Poole. He was a member of First Baptist Church. Mr. Poole was a retired mechanic and is the former owner and operator of The Gulf Station and Poole’s Wrecker Service. He served on the Baxley Fire Department and as Chief of the Altamaha Fire Department. He was a member of the Baxley Lion’s Club and the Appling County Young Farmers.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Poole was preceded in death by his brothers, Carlos Poole and Phillip Poole and a sister, Inez Hall.

Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Earline Griffis Poole of Baxley; daughters and sons-in-law, Harriette and Allen Hutchinson and Pamela and Charles Davis all of Baxley; sisters, Wilma M. Craven of Baxley, Mary Sally Hubbard and Martha Ann Poppell both of Wayne County; seven grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren.

A private family funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 4, 2020 in the Chapel of Swain Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Ferguson and Rev. Robert Wigley officiating and a eulogy was given by Randall Branch. A graveside service followed at Omega Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Michael Sellers, Josh Hutchinson, Zach Griffis, Drake Carter, Chase Stone, Lane Hutchinson, Dalton Sellers and Tyson Hutchinson.

Honorary pallbearers were the Fishermen Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church, Randall and Cathy Branch, Vance Faircloth and Charles and Velma Stone.

Musical selections were rendered by Gynda Reeves and Tripp Hardee.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
