Deacon Elzie Hayes Sr. departed this life on Tuesday August 31, 2021, at his residence. Elzie, 83, was born January 29, 1938, to the late Obie Hayes and Vernell Sweat Hayes.
At an early age he met and married the love of his life, the late Marilyn Carter Hayes, and to this union five children were born. These two were inseparable and their love was special. They based their 60-year marriage on Godly principles, and it showed in their everyday lives. God has filled Elzie’s void and now they are reunited together again in heaven. Elzie joined the First African Missionary Baptist Church at a very young age. He served on many boards at the church including Chairman of the Deacon Board for over 24 years, Senior Usher Board, Senior Citizen Ministry, and the Male Choir. Elzie enjoyed driving the school bus and did it well. He had many road miles with trips that he took from track, football, softball, tennis, band and basketball. Everyone knew if they were going on a trip and Elzie was driving, they would get there fast!
Elzie was preceded in death by his parents, the late Obie Hayes, Vernell Sweat Hayes, and Catherine Hayes, a brother Obie Hayes Jr., the Love of his Heart Marilyn Carter Hayes and his daughter Shelia Hayes Williams.
