Newly elected Brunswick Judicial Circuit District Attorney (DA) Keith Higgins stopped by The Baxley News-Banner last week for a quick visit. His first official day as DA over the five-county district was January 4.
Higgins has practiced law in Glynn County for more than 30 years. He practiced as a defense attorney and as an assistant district attorney for 23 years. He has been in private practice for the last 10 years.
I asked DA Higgins if he would be making any changes to the Baxley DA’s office, which serves Appling and Jeff Davis counties. He stated that ADA Jan Kennedy would remain as Managing Attorney for the Baxley office. He stated that a fulltime investigator would be hired for the Baxley office once again (each of the four offices will once again have a fulltime investigator). Higgins added that it is his hope to add an additional prosecuting attorney to the Baxley office as well, if funding allows. The new DA also hopes to institute an advisory council in each community to better understand the needs and issues in each community.
District Attorney Higgins did discuss the current state of Georgia’s court system as a result of COVID restrictions. “There have been no jury trials since March 2020,” cited Higgins. “This is creating quite a backlog in our court system. We hope to see jury trials start back up in March.”
“I look forward to serving the good people of Appling County and the district. I will do everything I can to make sure everyone is treated fairly,” concluded Higgins.
