The Pine Forest Garden Club was the recipient of the Shirley M. Lewis Environmental Awareness Award at the Oleander District meeting that was held in Brunswick on Oct. 9. The award was presented to the club that has accomplished the most in the environmental field. The Pine Forest Garden Club has a Green Team that provides monthly environmental tips. The club’s Horticulture Team offers programs and tips to ensure members promote environmentally beneficial practices. The club members collect recycled cans for a mission in Uganda that digs wells for locals and also collect tabs for the Ronald McDonald House. Used batteries are collected and recycled to avoid contamination of landfills. The club had a team in the Baxley Beautification Day to get the Yuck to the Truck. Members also planted trees with two groups of school students and their teachers to commemorate Arbor Day. Shown above is Susie Reed, PFGC president, left, receiving the award.
