The Appling Heritage Center is pleased to announce its nomination of the Appling County Courthouse for the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation’s Excellence in Rehabilitation award. The Excellence in Rehabilitation award recognizes projects that make compatible use of a building through repair, alterations or additions while preserving features of the property that convey its historic value.

Stan Brobston, Chairman of the Appling Heritage Center’s Board of Directors, said, “We are excited to have the opportunity to submit the Appling County Courthouse for the Georgia Trust’s consideration. We are very proud of our community’s successful efforts to protect this historic landmark. The nomination of the courthouse project is right in line with the Heritage Center’s efforts to preserve our community’s history.”

The rehabilitation work on the Appling County Courthouse preserved its original architectural elements while introducing new mechanical, electrical, fire protection and technological systems without disturbing the historic fabric of the structure. The Appling County Board of Commissioners undertook this ambitious project to rehabilitate the 1908 courthouse with the help of McCall & Associates, Inc., an architecture firm in Valdosta known for historic preservation projects. Two of the firm’s other recent projects, the Irwin and Pierce County courthouses, were honored with the same award for which Heritage Center is nominating the courthouse in Baxley.
