The Appling County Pirates defeated the Vidalia Indians 27-20 in a game that was filled with excitement and lead changes. The Pirates are now 10-1 on the season and will host Cook County, 6-5 overall, in the second round of the GHSA state playoffs. This will be the second year in a row that the Pirates have faced off against Cook County, who are from Region 1-AA, in the playoffs. Last year’s meeting took place in the first round as the top seeded Pirates were defeated 26-10 by the fourth seeded Hornets. The game is set to start at 7:30 p.m. on November 20 at Jimmy Swain Stadium. Let’s get out and support the Pirates!
Other region 2-AA playoff scores: The top seed from Region 2-AA Charlton County Indians defeated the Dublin Fighting Irish 30-8 and will host the Brooks County Trojans on Friday night. The third seeded McIntosh County Academy Buccaneers were defeated by the Swainsboro Tigers 21-7 and the fourth seeded Tatnall County Battle Creek Warriors were defeated by the Jefferson County Warriors 33-14.
Game recap - Pirates vs. Indians
The Pirates were able to get on the board first as they were able to get a fumble recovery by Chris Hill on the Indian 18. Pirate running back Tevin Fedrick took the next play around the corner for the score making the score, with the extra point attempt by Alberto Marquez, 7-0.
Neither team was able to get much offense going throughout the rest of the first quarter but the Pirates were able to force another Indian fumble, which was recovered by Zack Wright. Fedrick scored on another good run, this one a 33-yard run, making the score 13-0 with the extra point being no good.
The Indians were able to answer on their next possession starting at their own 38 and driving the ball down the field. The drive was capped off by an eight-yard touchdown pass making the score 13-6 with the extra point attempt being no good.
The Indians would even up the score later in the second quarter on a 22-yard touchdown pass making the score at half time 13-13.
The Indians were able to take advantage of a Pirate interception and take their first lead of the game in the third quarter as they got a long touchdown run making the score, with the extra point, 20-13.
There was no more scoring during the third quarter but the Pirate offense was able to get another score early in the fourth quarter as they started their drive at the Indian 45. Fedrick was able to get his third touchdown run of the game on a 17-yard run making the score 20-19 with the extra point being blocked.
The final score of the game came with the Pirates getting the ball on their own 39 with 3:04 left on the clock. The Pirates were able to get a 59-yard touchdown pass as Pirate quarterback Tyler Avera was forced to throw the ball up for grabs as he was being pressured by Indian defenders. The ball was tipped and Pirate wide receiver Arthur Williams caught the ball and ran it in for the touchdown. The Pirates decided to go for the two-point conversion and were successful as Avera was able to connect with Fedrick making the score 27-20 with just over two minutes remaining in the game.
The Pirate defense was able to seal the victory as they were able to force another Indian fumble, which was recovered by the Pirates on their own 37 with 54.8 left in the game. The Pirates were then able to run out the clock preserving the win.
