Pirates defeat Buccaneers 22-20

The Appling County Pirates hosted the McIntosh County Academy Buccaneers on Friday, October 23 in a key region 2-AA region match up with the Pirates getting the victory 22-20. The Pirates are now 7-1 overall and 5-1 in region play and now are in sole possession of second place in the region. The Pirates will travel to face the Tattnall County Warriors who are 6-2 overall and 4-2 in region play on Friday, October 30. Let’s get out and support the Pirates!

Game summary

The Pirates opened the game by kicking the ball to the Buccaneers who would begin their first drive at their own 27. The Pirate defense would get the first score of the game with Arthur Williams picking up a fumble and returning it for a score to make the score 6-0 with the extra point attempt being no good.

The Pirate defense was able to take advantage of another Buccaneer mistake on the next drive with another fumble recovery by Mondrecus Dasher at the Buccaneer 43-yard line. On the first Pirate’s first offensive play Antwon Jackson ran untouched for a touchdown making the score 12-0 with the two-point conversion attempt failing.

The Buccaneers were able to answer with a scoring drive of their own after starting at their own 35 making the score 12-7.

The Pirates would start their next drive at their own 20 and would give the ball back on an interception at the Pirate 44-yard line. However the Pirate defense came up big again with an interception by Williams giving the ball back to the Pirates at the Buccaneer 41.

The Pirate offense was able to get a good drive going but were not able to get all the way to the end-zone but were able to get a field goal to begin the second quarter from Alberto Marquez making the score 15-7.

The Buccaneers were able to score later in the quarter after another long drive that began at their own 30 making the score at halftime 15-14.

The Pirate Brigade and the Buccaneer band performed very well during the halftime show.

The third quarter began with the Pirates receiving the kick. The Pirate offense was not able to get a drive going but on the ensuing punt, Williams was able to recover his second fumble of the night when the Buccaneer player muffed the punt giving the Pirate offense the ball back at the Buccaneer 33.

The Pirates were able to get their final score of the night on an 18-yard touchdown run by Tevin Fedrick making the score, with the extra point, 22-14.

The final score of the contest came later in the third quarter with the Buccaneers making another long drive starting at their own 36, which ended with a touchdown. The Buccaneers decided to try for the two-point conversion but the Pirates were able to make the tackle just before the goal-line keeping the score 22-20.

Neither team was able to get much going offensively in the fourth quarter and the Pirates were able to take a knee three straight times near the end of the game to preserve the victory.
