Pirates defeat Blue Tide 35-7

The Appling County Pirates traveled to Long County on Friday September 11 and were able to get a win in their first region contest, 35-7. The Pirates opened the game by receiving the kick and starting their drive at their own 36 yard line. The Pirates first play was a sixteen yard run by LaShaun Moore and after a Blue Tide penalty the Pirates were first and ten on the Blue Tide 43 yard line. Later in the drive Kedrick Spearman picked up another first down with a ten yard run and with the Pirates facing a third and fourteen deep in Blue Tide territory Moore was able to burst through for fourteen yards to keep the drive moving. The drive ended with a ten-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Avera to Tevin Fedrick. Alberto Marquez made the extra point making the score 7-0.

The Blue Tide began their first offensive drive at their own 31 yard line and were able to start a good drive of their own. The Blue Tide were able to pick up two first downs before the Pirate defense was able to force them into a fourth down and six yards to go situation on the Pirate 41 yard line. The Blue Tide decided to go for it but the Pirate defense came up with a sack by Dale Howard giving the ball back to the Pirate offense with great field position at the Blue Tide 47.

The Pirate offense began the ensuing drive where they left off with a long pass from Avera to Arthur Williams setting the Pirates up with first and goal at the ten. However a holding penalty forced the Pirates back and Marquez was not able to make the field goal attempt. The rest of the first half was a defensive struggle with neither offense being able to move the ball much.

The second half started with the Pirates kicking to the Blue Tide, which would begin their drive at their own 20 yard line. The Blue Tide were able to move the ball down the field but would be forced to punt giving the ball back to the Pirates. The Pirate offense was not able to get much going and would be forced to punt the ball back to the Blue Tide. The Pirate defense once again held strong forcing another punt but the Pirate offense also stalled and were forced to punt the ball back to the Blue Tide.

The Blue Tide began the ensuing drive at their own 45 but the Pirate offense was able to take advantage of a mistake with Williams picking up a fumble and returning it for a touchdown. Marquez made the extra point attempt making the score 14-0.

The Pirates were able to pin the Blue Tide deep in their own territory at their own ten. The Pirate defense held strong forcing a punt. The Pirate offense would start their drive at the Blue Tide 39 yard line and scored again with 12.1 seconds left in the third quarter on a 39 yard touchdown run by Fedrick. The extra point attempt was good making the score 21-0.

The Pirates then took advantage of another Blue Tide mistake with Colby Baucom recovering a fumble at the Blue Tide 34. Once again the Pirate offense was able to score quickly on Fedrick’s 34 yard touchdown run making the score with the extra point 28-0. The Blue Tide offense began their next drive on their own 35 and were able to drive the ball picking up two first downs before they were able to get a long touchdown run making the score with the extra point 28-7.

The Pirates were able to recover the onside kick attempt and would begin their next drive at their own 45. After picking up a first down the Pirates gave the ball back to the Blue Tide on a fumble that was recovered at the Blue Tide 25. The Blue Tide were able to start another good drive picking up two first downs before the Pirate defense was able to force them into another fourth down and long situation. The Blue Tide offense was not able to convert and the Pirates took over on downs at their own 48.

The Pirates were able to get the last score of the game with a 50 yard run by Fedrick to the Blue Tide two yard line and after a five yard penalty Spearman was able to score on a seven yard run. The extra point attempt was good making the final score 35-7.

The Pirates, 3-0 overall 1-0 in region, will host rival Jeff Davis County on Friday September 18 with the game scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. Let’s get out and support the Pirates.
