County approves 2010 millage rate

The Appling County Board of Commissioners held a called meeting on Tuesday, September 8 at 5:00 p.m. During the meeting the commissioners approved the county millage rate at 12.95 mills, Appling County School Board at 14.67 mills, fire and rescue service at .47 mills and state at .25 mills with the total tax levy coming to 28.34 mills. The commissioners stated that the current rate is the same as it was last year.

Other business

The commissioners approved the bid selections on the following roads: Windy Hill bid by Dykes Grassy of $91,894.60; Vernon Williams Road bid by Littlefield Construction of $205,618.50; Fire Tower Road Bridge bid by Southern Concrete of $397,500.00. The total of the bids is $695,013.10 and were approved with no opposition.

The commissioners opened sealed bids on a building and grounds replacement truck as follows: Sapp Ford Company bid a 2010 F250 for $20,691.04; Foster Rowland bid a Chevy for $24,996.00; Cothern-Varnadore bid a Chevy for $24,529.88. The commissioners voted to approve the lowest and best bid pending review by County Manager Lee Lewis and Building and Grounds Superintendent Troy Rushing.

The commissioners had planned to hear information about the Code Enforcement Officer but the information was tabled and is planned to be heard at the next meeting on Tuesday, September 15 at 6:00 p.m.
