Godfrey gives account of incidents

Baxley Police Chief James Godfrey reports that the following are highlights of incidents that were handled by officers.

On Aug. 26 at approximately 6:31 p.m. officers answered a call to Quality Cleaners on Bay Street in reference to a theft. On arrival the clerk told officers that while she was busy in the back person(s) unknown entered the business and removed the cash register. A b/m subject was seen entering the business from the rear and in a few minutes left out of the business with the register and got into a silver colored vehicle and headed out Bay Street. The area was checked, but no vehicle was located fitting this description.

Aug. 27 at approx. 1:10 p.m., met with a complainant at the Appling Health Care nursing home on Donnie Lane in reference to a burglary. On arrival the complainant told officers that person(s) unknown had been going into the old nursing home, which is now vacant.

Aug. 27 at approx. 5:45 p.m., acting on information from a concerned citizen about some drug activity at room 106 of the Pine Lodge Motel. On arrival and after consent to search, several partially smoked marijuana cigarettes, and rolling papers were seized. Arrested in connection with this incident was David Miles, 42, on charges of one count each of possession of marijuana and possession of a drug related object.

Aug. 28 at approx. 8:14 a.m., answered a call to a burglary at the Church of Christ on 1st Street. On arrival the complainant told officers that person(s) unknown had entered the church through a rear door and rummaged through several desk drawers in the offices. Nothing was reported missing however the burglars left behind a small black box containing a golden pendant with two blue stones on it.

Aug. 28 at approx. 10:30 a.m., met with the resident at a Bay Street address in reference to a theft. On arrival the complainant told officers that person(s) unknown had removed several metal pipes that he had stacked up in his backyard.

Aug. 28 at approx. 11:35 a.m., met with the school resource officer at the Appling County High School in reference to some vandalism. On arrival the S.R.O. showed officers to the football field where person(s) unknown had poured salt on the grass in the shape of WC. There were also some graffiti done to the press box window, which also was related to WC.

Aug. 29 at approx. 7:30 a.m., answered a call to the Church of Christ on 1st Street in reference to a burglary. On arrival the complainant told officers that person(s) unknown had entered the church and rummaged through several offices and desk drawers and caused some vandalism inside the church. Also a banner that was hung between two posts was cut down.

Aug. 29 at approx. 12:27 p.m., answered a call to a burglary at a Beach Road address. On arrival the complainant told officers that when she pulled into her driveway she saw two w/m subjects run from her home. Further checking she discovered that they had burglarized her home, ransacking it and writing graffiti on the walls. The complainant also told officers that her home had been broken into once before in the last couple of days. The complainant told officers that after she checked through her home she noticed she was missing a small black box that contained a gold colored emblem with two blue stones on it. Further investigation into this incident and the incidents of the Aug. 27 burglary to the old nursing home and the Aug. 28 and Aug. 29 burglaries to the Church of Christ, resulted in the arrest of two juvenile subjects, one age 15 and the other age 14, and both with a Baxley address. Both juveniles were released to the juvenile authorities on charges of five counts of burglary pending further judicial proceedings.

Aug. 31 at approx. 3:31 p.m., answered a call to a Kenny Lane address in reference to an assault. On arrival the complainant told officers that her boyfriend had kicked the door open and entered her home and physically assaulted her. Arrested in connection with this incident was Norris Gibbs, 24, of Surrency, on charges of one count each of burglary, criminal trespass and battery.

Aug 31 at approx. 9:00 p.m., answered a call to the old nursing home on Donnie Lane in reference to a burglary and vandalism. On arrival the complainant told officers that person(s) unknown had entered the vacant home and vandalized it, by discharging two fire extinguishers in several rooms.

Sept. 1 at approx. 4:31 p.m., met with the resident at an Oak Street address in reference to a theft. On arrival the complainant told officers that person(s) unknown had removed two air conditioner window units from two of her rental properties. One was on Crosby Street and the other was on Oak Street.

Sept. 1 at approx. 10:00 p.m., met with the resident at a Tippins Street address in reference to a burglary. On arrival the resident told officers that while he was gone person(s) unknown had broken into his home and removed an undetermined amount of change.
