Pirates over Warriors in OT!!

The Appling County Pirates played its final home regular season game of the 2008 season on Friday, October 31. Senior night was held to honor the senior members of the band, cheerleading squad, football and softball teams, all of which have represented Appling County well during the season.

The game began with a good return by the visiting Warriors of Tatnall County. Just a few plays later, the Warriors would strike first only to have the TD called back because of a penalty. Inside the ten, a Warrior player was hit by a host of Pirate defenders and coughed up the ball. Pirate, ball-hawking safety, Wendell Williams scooped up the loose ball to hold the Warriors out of the end zone early. The Pirate offense displayed the aerial assault early in the contest and quickly moved the ball near midfield. With 9:04 on the clock, the Pirates returned the favor and fumbled the ball over to the Warrior defense, which scooped up the ball to take possession. With 7:45 remaining in the first quarter, the Pirate defense held the Warrior attempt on fourth and three. Both teams swapped possession for most of the remainder of the first quarter, however with just under three minutes remaining, Tatnall County converted on third and 26 moving deep inside Pirate territory. As the quarter ended, Tatnall County held possession at the Pirate ten. Shortly after the second quarter began, the Warriors kicked a 26-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead. The ensuing Pirate possession began at the Pirate 27-yard line. Several plays later, the Pirate offense had eaten some clock and found itself inside Warrior territory. However, the Pirates failed to convert on fourth and inches and the Warriors took possession away from the Pirates as well as momentum in the game. The teams exchanged punts to end the half with the visiting Warriors of Tatnall County on top of the Appling County Pirates.

During intermission the Tatnall County Band and award winning Pirate Brigade performed for the crowd that was on hand for senior night.

The Pirates first possession out of the locker room began on its own 36. After converting early in the half on another fourth and short, the Pirates were forced to punt. Josh Leggett and the Pirate punt coverage team pinned the Warriors deep inside their own territory at the two-yard line. After the Tatnall drive stalled, the Pirates took over possession at the Warrior 34-yard line. Javon James had two key runs and from twelve yards out, Wendell Williams found Tyler Avera for the TD pass and reception. Wendell Williams would add the PAT; Pirates led 7-3 with 3:23 remaining in the third quarter. With 3:13 left in the quarter, Appling County recovered a Warrior fumble and found itself inside Warrior territory. With 2:29 remaining in the quarter, the Pirate offense converted on fourth and seven. Later in the drive, Javon James scored on an 11-yard run. The PAT was added by Williams and the score was 14-3, Pirates over the Warriors with under a minute left in the third quarter. The Warriors would answer and answer quickly with good field position after a good return of the Pirate kickoff. The Warriors scored on a twelve-yard TD run and added the two-point conversion to bring the score to 14-11, Appling County. Later in the game, after driving to the opponent red zone, the Pirate offense stalled. With just 2:06 remaining in the contest, Tatnall County took possession. After moving the ball well through the air in a hurry up style offense, the Warriors kicked a field goal with just: 44 seconds remaining on the clock to tie the game a t 14-14. The game would go to overtime and each team would begin possession on the fifteen going in. Appling scored in it’s overtime possession after fullback Willie Wright finally got loose to the Tatnall one yard-line. On the next play, QB Wendell Williams took it in on sneak play to take the lead 20-14 after the Warrior field goal block team blocked the PAT attempt. After driving to the Pirate six, the Warrior offense began going in reverse. The game ended on a fourth and goal play from the seventeen. The pass was incomplete and the Pirates held on to seal the victory while improving to eight and one on the season. The Pirates wrap up regular season play this week at Benedictine in Savannah on Friday, November 7.
