Locals arrested for theft

According to Appling County Sheriff Benny Deloach, Satilla REA has reported several wire thefts in the last several months. Investigations have resulted in three arrests. Melba Jean Murphy, age 48, of Surrency, was arrested September 16 and charged with theft by receiving stolen property. Shafia Leigh Murphy, age 24, of Surrency, was arrested on September 16 and charged with two counts of theft by receiving stolen property. Rodney Shawn Murphy, age 26, of Jesup, was arrested on September 18 and charged with theft by taking.

Also on September 20, deputies answered a call to Hwy. 144 in reference to a theft. The complainant stated he received an order for wire on Thursday and on Saturday he realized several rolls of black wire were missing along with a Stihl concrete saw. Items missing were valued at $11,090.00. Investigation has resulted in five arrests. On September 24 Janie Welch, age 33, was arrested and charged with person party to a crime, and has since been released, Mary Christina Nencioni, age 21, was arrested on September 25, and charged with person party to a crime and has since been released. Also James Branum age 36, William James Mobley, age 37, and Randy Shane Branch, age 19, all of Baxley, were charged with theft by taking. Branum, Mobley, and Branch are currently being held in the Appling County Detention Center.

Sept. 22, a complainant came to the sheriff’s office to report identity fraud. The complainant stated someone obtained his social security number and opened an account with Dell Inc. and added that he had not attempted to open an account with Dell. Investigation continues.

Sept. 22, answered a call to Old Surrency Road in reference to a burglary.Unknown person(s) forcibly entered a locked building and stole a Lincoln Wire Welder, Koike Beetle Track Torch and Jancy Magnetic Base Drill. Investigation continues.

Sept.22, answered a call to Kate Mann Road in reference to a theft. A complainant stated he went to a corn field to move the pivot irrigation system and noticed person (s) unknown had cut the control wire and removed approximately 600 feet of copper wire, valued at approximately $6,000.00 to replace. Investigation continues.

Sept.23, answered a call to Hwy. 341 in reference to a theft. The complainant stated 450 gallons of diesel fuel had been stolen from a tank. Investigation continues.

Sept.23, answered a call to South Main Extension, in Surrency, in reference to a theft. The complainant stated copper wiring from a meter base and tin siding was stolen from a bulk tobacco barn. Investigation continues.

Sept. 23, a complainant came to sheriff’s office to report that an ex-wife had opened an account using his name and social security number. The account has been turned over to the collection agency.

Sept.23, answered a call to Michael Street in reference to damage to property. The complainant stated someone had knocked down a gate. Investigation continues.

Sept 23, answered a call to Hilltop Road in reference to a domestic dispute. The dispute was between a husband and a wife. The wife left the residence and dispute was settled.

Sept 25, answered a call to Hwy. 15 in reference to suspected counterfeit money. A complainant received money from a local convenience store and thought it might possibly be counterfeit. The responding officer took money to a local bank and verified that the money was not counterfeit.

Sept 25, answered a call to Eason’s Store in reference to a gas drive off. The complainant stated that the offender received $53.50 in gas and drove off.The offender was found and returned to store and paid restitution.

Sept 25, answered a call to Riveridge Drive in reference to harassing phone calls. The complainant was advised to see Magistrate Court.

Sept 26, answered a call to Blackshear Hwy. in reference to a dispute. The dispute was between a landlord and a renter. The responding officer advised the complainant to see the Magistrate Judge and added that this was a civil matter.

Sept 26, answered a call to Oscar Tippins Road in reference to damage to property. A complainant stated unknown person(s) caused damage the yard by spinning their tires on the complainant’s grass. Investigation continues.

Sept 26, answered a call to Lamar Crosby Road in reference to an unruly child. The parent stated the child will not obey and refuses to go to school. The Juvenile Justice officer was called and the child was turned over to him.

Sept 26, answered a call to Red Oak Road in reference to damage to property. The complainant stated someone cut his driver side front tire on vehicle. Investigation continues.

Sept 27, answered a call to the VFW in reference to vandalism to property. A complainant stated that the door had been broken. Waylon Williams, age 39, of Baxley was arrested and charged with DOC.

Sept 27, answered a call to the Appling HealthCare System in reference to an argument/fight. The disturbance occurred between two individuals. A Donald William Smith, age 24, of Baxley was arrested and charged with public drunkenness.

Sept 27, answered a call to Ben Carter Road in reference to a theft. A complainant stated that person(s) unknown stole a white gold one-karat diamond bracelet from the complainant’s residence. Investigation continues.

Sept 28, answered a call to Yellow Pine Circle in reference to a possible suicide attempt. The complainant was advised to take daughter to the Appling Emergency Room. The responding officer followed complainant to the E.R.

Sept 28, answered a call to James Drive in reference to a domestic dispute. The dispute was between a step-father and a step-daughter. The step-daughter left the residence.

Sept 28, answered a call to Piney Bluff Road and Melton Chapel Church Road in reference to damage to government property. The person(s) unknown broke both side glasses and front windshield of a Caterpillar road-grader that was being leased by the Appling County Road Department Investigation continues.

Sept 28, answered a call to Gardner Road in reference to a domestic dispute. A complainant stated that she and the offender got into a verbal dispute, which lead to a physical altercation. Jose Escoben, age 27, of Baxley was arrested and charged with DOC.

Sept 28, answered a call to Coot Jones Street in reference to harassment. The dispute was between neighbors. The Complainant was referred to the Magistrate Judge.

Sept 28, answered a call to Dykes Road in reference to a theft. A complainant stated unknown person(s) went into a vehicle and took a Dewalt drill, Nokia cell phone and several different medications. Investigation continues.

Sept 29, answered a call to Parkers Convenience Store in reference to a private property accident. The sun was shining in the eyes of the driver and could not see and as a result hit the corner of the building.
