BOE hears public remarks

The Appling County Board of Education (BOE) held its regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, May 4 at 7:00 p.m. at the Board Office. During the meeting Gary Solomon spoke to the BOE about the Seamless Summer Program that has been cut for the last few years. The Seamless Summer Program is a service provided by the school system to allow students the opportunity to have school provided lunches throughout part of the summer. Solomon asked the BOE to consider reestablishing the program and to deliver the meals to different satellite sites to ensure that all students would be able to have access to the meals.

Superintendent Sam Herndon stated that the program had been cut due to the cost and that the BOE would take a close look at the program in the upcoming days.

Other business

The Policy GBQ for Professional Personnel Retirement was passed by a five to zero vote.

A recommendation was made by Herndon to grant a 90-day additional medical leave to Andy Dowdney at the request of his doctor. The motion was carried with a five to zero vote.

The BOE members were presented with further information on the upcoming budget. The BOE members asked questions about the upcoming stimulus money which were answered by Sandy Dominy who gave information about how the money can be used.

M.C. Barlow stated that the Appling County Pirate baseball team finished the regular season by winning the region and that the baseball field that the team used is one of the best in the area.

The BOE will hold a called meeting on Monday, May 11 at 1:00 p.m. at the Board Office.
