The Lady Pirates of Appling County High School caught fire several weeks ago. They won six straight before losing in the region tournament championship game to Brantley County. On Friday, February 27, the Pirates hosted the Lady Bulldogs of Thomasville High School (15-8). The Lady Pirates came in with a record of 16 wins against 12 losses, including wins in 7 of the last 8.
In first round action, both teams played tough hard-nosed defense throughout the game. Neither team could build a substantial lead, late in the contest, the Lady Pirates managed to score several lay ups to stretch the lead. Lady Pirate, Kellie Bacon, during one stretch of the fourth quarter, made a drive to the hoop for a lay-up and followed that with 8 straight free throws to help seal the win down the stretch. On Tuesday, the Lady Pirates travel to play Northeast Macon at 6:00 p.m. The Lady Raiders, enter the contest with a mark of 21-8, including wins in 14 of the last 16 games.
In other region action, Mitchell County defeated Long County (64-41), Albany defeated Pierce County (54-48) and Brooks County defeated Brantley County (53-50). As a result, the Appling County Lady Pirates are the lone representative from region 2AA remaining in the playoffs.
