Council sets public hearing date for annexations

The Baxley City Council members set a date of July 7 at 6:00 p.m. for a public hearing for two proposed annexations at the regular council meeting on June 9. The public hearing will offer opportunities for comments relating to the first petition for establishing a Residential (R-20) zone filed by Tammy Lynn Taylor, property located at 282 Pickett Road and the second petition for annexation to follow is for establishing a Residential (R-15) zone filed by James T. and Tammie C. Culverhouse, property located at 44 Jennifer Lane.

The regular council meeting of June 23 was rescheduled for the following Thursday, June 25. Mayor Steve Rigdon announced they will be attending the GMA convention in Savannah.

The council members made a unanimous vote to authorize the County Election Superintendent Diane Hallman to conduct city elections.

Mayor Pro Tem Dr. Esco Hall reported he attended the 911 Advisory Board meeting on Friday, June 5. Hall stated, “we did not get the funds we were expecting to because it went to the state budget.” Mayor Pro Tem also announced he will be attending the ITC convention for the National League of Cities on Thursday, June 11 in Nashville.

Mayor Rigdon announced that City Manager Jeff Baxley was absent and read the City Manager’s reports, and they are as follows:

-The demolition of the old public works building is progressing nicely and should easily meet the demolition deadline in the contract. This will include the concrete slab removal as well.

-There will be a big opening on Thursday, July 9 at 11:00 a.m. at City Hall on the replacement of the interceptor line along the canal bank between the new plant and Miles Road.

-The new street sweeper is here and is doing very well. Gary says that they are very pleased with its capabilities.

-Dewayne Spearman had been promoted from a part-time status to full-time with the police department. This position became available when Scotty Tanner resigned to take a position as a deputy with Appling County.
