The following are highlights of incidents that were handled by members of the Baxley Police Department.
On May 3 at approximately 12:10 officers answered a call to the Pines Trailer Park located on Hatch Pkwy South in reference to a fight. On arrival officers observed several individuals at the end of the driveway fighting. As the officers approached the scene some of the individuals ran off leaving only the two fighting. The officers attempted to break up the fight, but the subjects would not comply with the officers’s orders, resulting in the officers deploying the M26 taser. The subjects were then taken into custody without further incident. Arrested in connection with this incident was Willard Manley, age 50, of Willacoochee, of one count each of disorderly conduct, fighting, public intoxication, obstruction of a police officer and concealed weapon. And a Kenneth A. Bowman, age 35, of Newark, NJ, on charges of one count each of disorderly conduct, fighting and obstruction of a police officer.
May 6 at approx. 9:12 a.m., answered a call to the Appling County High School in reference to a theft. On arrival officers met with the S.R.O. officer who told them that a female student had reported her purse was missing from the girl’s locker room in the gym. The S.R.O. also told officers that he was going to review the surveillance tapes and would get back with them on his findings.
May 8 at approx. 12:14 p.m., answered a call to Apt. 6 Baker Homes on Holton Street in reference to a lady pulling a gun on a subject. On arrival the officers confronted the tenant about the incident and after a brief conversation the officers recovered a loaded shotgun from under the cover on a bed. After further investigation warrants were secured for the arrest of Lori Turner Diamond, 44, of Apt. 6 Baker Homes for two counts aggravated assault.
May 8 at approx. 12:45 p.m., answered a call to Citi Trends located on Main Street in reference to a theft. On arrival officers met with the clerk who had a subject detained for taking some items without paying for them. Arrested in connection with this theft was Melissa Gail Gaffney, 23, of Vidalia, on charges of one count theft by shoplifting.
May 8 approx. 10:59 p.m., responded to an alarm going off at Southern Express located on N. Blvd. On arrival the officers observed that the glass door had been busted out, and after checking the business for burglars, no one was inside or around the business. The business was then secured until a key holder was notified and arrived. Reported missing was an undetermined amount of currency and a six-pack of beer.
May 9 at approx. 11:05 a.m., met with the clerk at the Qwik Chic located on N. Main Street in reference to a counterfeit twenty-dollar bill. On arrival the clerk told officers that she had received the money from a gentleman at the drive thru window. The counterfeit bill was seized and reported to the secret service for further follow up.
May 9 at approx. 10:30 a.m., met with the clerk at the Scottish Inns located on Hatch Pkwy South in reference to some property damage. On arrival the clerk told the officers that they had discovered the damage that morning, that sometime during the night person(s) unknown had collided into a brick column in front of room no. 45, resulting in a considerable amount of damage to it.
May 12 at approx. 4:42 p.m., met with a clerk at Joe’s Qwik Stop located on Bay Street in reference to some bad checks. On arrival the clerk told officers that they had taken two different checks in their daily receipts and deposited them, and they later came back marked as closed account and unable to located account.
May 15 at approx. 1:19 p.m., answered a call to Down to Earth Trailers located on East Parker Street in reference to a theft. On arrival the complainant told officers that he had been experiencing several thefts from his business. After a brief investigation into the incident Steven Stone, 22, of Baxley, was arrested on one count of theft by taking.
May 16 at approx. 3:27 p.m., answered a call to Wal-Mart in reference to a theft. On arrival officers met with the LPC officer who had a subject detained for taking some items without paying for them. Arrested in connection with this incident was Archaga Guadalupe Alverez, 38, of Baxley, on charges of one count theft by taking.
May 17 at approx. 10:32 a.m., met with the complainant at Petro on East Parker Street in reference to a theft. On arrival the complainant told officers that while she was inside doing laundry, person(s) unknown entered her 2001 Ford Expedition and removed her purse which contained an undetermined amount of currency, cards and other valuable papers.
May 17 at approx. 3:51 p.m., met with a complainant at Pine Lodge Motel in reference to a theft. On arrival the complainant told officers that some time during the night person(s) unknown entered his vehicle and removed an undetermined amount of currency, a radar detector, a watch and some other items.
May 18 at approx. 9:52 p.m., answered a call to Wal-Mart in reference to a theft. On arrival officers met with the LPC officer who had a subject detained for taking some items without paying for them. Arrested in connection with this theft was Latasha N. Dasher, 17, of Baxley, on charges of one count theft by shoplifting.
May 19 at approx. 6:00 p.m., met with the resident at a Moody Street address in reference to a theft. On arrival the resident told officers that person(s) unknown had removed three bicycles from her home. She had found one around the Speer Homes apartments and had got it back. The two bikes that are still missing are described as a medium blue Mongoose, 10-speed girl’s bike with a light on the front, and a Huffy Surfside, light blue bike.
May 20 at approx. 8:10 p.m., met with a resident at a West Tolison Address in reference to a theft. On arrival the resident told officers that while she was away from her home person(s) unknown entered it and removed two TV sets and a DVD player. The TV sets are described as a 25 inch RCA color, a 19 inch Sony color and a Sponge Bob DVD player.
May 21 at approx. 6:38 p.m., made a traffic stop on a vehicle for failing to stop at a stop sign. After getting the vehicle stopped and a consent search, a quantity of marijuana was seized along with other drug paraphernalia. Arrested in connection with the stop and seizure was Kyle Raymond Wiggins, 20, of Baxley, on charges of one count each of failure to stop at a stop sign, possession of marijuana and possession of a drug related object. Also arrested was Brianna Willoughby, 18, also of Baxley, on charges of one count poss. of marijuana.
May 21 at approx. 10:58, answered a call to an armed robbery at the Taquiera Don Juan restaurant located on Bay Street. On arrival officer met with two complainants who related to the officers that as they were leaving the restaurant, two black males dressed in all black, with black bandannas over their face ran from the rear of the business and robbed them at gun point of undetermined amount of currency. The robbers were armed with a long gun and a handgun. The K-9 unit from Reidsville was called in to assist in tracking. The K-9 unit was unable to locate any subjects.
May 26 at approx. 11:20 p.m., attempted to make a traffic stop on a Ford pickup for a possible wanted subject, when the driver of the truck sped off trying to avoid the officers and after a short chase the truck came to rest in a yard on Lackawanna Street after striking several bushes, pot plants and a pine tree. The driver then got out of the truck and attempted to flee on foot, but was taken into custody without incident. Arrested in connection with this incident was Carol Renee Morrow, 38, of Alma, on charges of one count each of too fast for conditions, failure to stop at a stop sign, reckless driving, driving on suspended drivers license, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, and possession of a drug related object.
May 27 at approx. 4:00 p.m., met with a complainant at the Appling County High School Baseball field house in reference to a burglary. On arrival the complainant told officers that person(s) unknown had damaged a door to gain entry and removed a digital video camera and 19 inch Insignia TV, five baseball bats, name brand Stealths, two wood bats and two metal bats.
May 30 at approx. 11:40 a.m., responded to the area of MLK Drive in reference to shots fired. On arrival officers met with a complainant who told them that a black male subject pulled up at the corner of her back yard, got out with a silver looking rifle, shouted out something, then got back into his car and shot the rifle in the air and sped off. The subject’s vehicle was described as an older model gray in color Corsica, Cavalier or maybe an Impala.
May 30 at approx. 10:07 a.m., answered a call to Hungry Lion convenience store located on Hwy 15 South in reference to a burglary. On arrival the complainant told officers that sometime during the night that person(s) unknown had removed a window unit air conditioner to gain entry into the business. Reported missing were several cartons of cigarettes.
May 31 at approx. 2:32 p.m., answered a call to meet a complainant at the Pine Lodge Motel in regards to some illegal drug activity going on and a possible wanted person inside one of the rooms. Officers acting on this information went to the designated room where they found that the subject in question was wanted by the Appling County Sheriff’s Office, and another subject that was there was wanted by the Jeff Davis Sheriff’s Office. During this incident officers seized several needles, a drug pipe, and other drug paraphernalia inside the room. Arrested in connection with this incident was Sonya Davis, 32, and Katie Kirkland, 25, both of Baxley, on charges of one count each of poss. of drug paraphernalia and outstanding warrants.
