Game recap (Appling vs. Benedictine)
Benedictine received the opening kick and drove the ball all the way down to the Pirate five-yard line. The Pirate defense held strong and on fourth and goal were able to shut down the Benedictine attack. The Pirate offense took over, but was unable to get a drive going and was forced to punt. Throughout the first quarter of play both defensive units held strong as neither team could find the end zone.
In the second, with 7:23 on the clock, Benedictine struck first when they kicked a 45-yard field goal making the score 3-0.
On the ensuing kickoff, the Pirates had great field position following a great return by Tevin Fedrick to the Pirate 45-yard line. After some great running by Fedrick and Antwon Jackson, big fullback Kedrick Spearmon capped the drive off by running the ball in the end zone from two yards out. The PAT was good, and with 3:45 remaining before the halftime break, the score was 7-3 and would remain unchanged until the break.
During halftime, the Pirate Marching Brigade did an outstanding job entertaining the audience.
In the third quarter, the Pirates had first possession and started from their own 24-yard line. The offensive unit drove the ball down the field and completed a 76-yard drive when Spearmon scampered six yards for another touchdown. With 8:28 remaining in the third, the score was 14-3.
Early in the fourth quarter, the Pirates hit pay dirt again when Tevin Fedrick darted 12 yards to the end zone to cap another successful drive. The score with 11:27 remaining was 21-3.
On Benedictine’s next possession, running back John Williams broke free from the hard-hitting Pirate defense and went 36 yards for Benedictine’s final score of the evening. The team decided to go for a two-point conversion but came up a little short making the score 21-9 with 9:35 to play in the game.
The Pirates next drive went all the way down to the Benedictine five-yard line before running out of steam. The Pirates turned the ball over on downs and Benedictine’s offense took over from their own five. On their first offensive play, big Pirate defensive lineman Dale Howard wrapped Benedictine’s quarterback up in the end zone causing a safety. This made the score 23-9 with 3:01 remaining in the game. The score would remain unchanged for the remainder of the game.
“My concern is that we have not put together four quarters. We have got to fix this before Friday night (against Vidalia),” said Coach Pollock following the game against Benedictine.
