The Appling County Pirates traveled to Tattnall County on Friday, October 20 and were able to get a thrilling 17-14 victory over the Battle Creek Warriors. The Pirates are now 8-1 overall, 6-1 in region play and with the win are assured at least the third seed in Region 2-AA.

The top two spots are not out of reach for the Pirates with McIntosh County Academy 7-2 overall, 6-1 in region play hosting Charlton County 8-0-1 overall, 7-0 in region play on Friday, November 6. The Pirates will also have a tough task on Senior night as they host Benedictine 5-4 overall, 3-4 in region play at Jimmy Swain Stadium with the game scheduled to start at 7:30.

With a Pirate win and a Charlton loss there would be a repeat of last year with the top three spots being decided by a coin flip. The Pirates, win or lose, would take the second spot in the region with a McIntosh loss.

The fourth and final playoff spot in region 2-AA is also up grabs as Tattnall County 6-3 overall, 4-3 in region play will host Brantley County also 6-3 overall, 4-3 in region play.

Game recap

Neither offense was able to get much going in the first quarter so the game remained scoreless until the Warriors were able to score on their first drive of the second quarter. The 80-yard touchdown drive made the score 6-0 after the extra point attempt was no good.

Once again both defenses were able to keep each offense in check making the score at halftime 6-0.

The third quarter opened with the Pirates receiving the kick but they were not able to get much going and were forced to punt.

The Warriors started the third quarter just as they did in the second by putting together another long drive of 71 yards making the score, with the two-point conversion, 14-0.

The Pirate offense was able to answer on their ensuing possession by starting at their own 36 and driving the ball down the field and ending with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Avera to Tevin Fedrick. Alberto Marquez added the extra point to make the score at the end of the third quarter 14-7.

The Pirates were able to even up the score early in the fourth quarter after starting their drive at their own 45, they drove the ball to the Warrior 18 where they faced a fourth and eight. The Pirates decided to go for it and were able to get just enough for the first down on a pass from Avera to Arthur Williams. The Pirates were then able to score on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Avera to Dennis Copeland making the score, with the extra point, 14-14.

Neither team was able to get much offense going but the Pirates were able to take advantage of a Warrior mistake late in the fourth. After the Pirate offense stalled the Pirates got a great punt from Avera, which was muffed by the Warriors and recovered by Ben O’Steen at the Warrior 19. The Pirates then ran two plays to get the ball to the 15 and with 18.0 seconds left in the game Marquez was able to send the ball through the uprights to make the final score 17-14.

Let’s get out and support the Pirates!
