Limping bandit arrested for bank robbery

Cecil Stephen Haire, 52 of Douglas and former resident of Appling County was arrested on Friday, July 17. Haire lived in Baxley for a number of years is a 1976 graduate of Appling County High School and was a member of the Pirate baseball team. Haire was arrested after a witness saw him leave the National Bank of South Carolina (NBSC) in Mount Pleasant and provided authorities with his license plate number. Haire also known as the “Limping Bandit” due to a limp as a result of childhood polio, is accused of robbing over 20 banks in the Southeast over the last three years. The 23 robberies have taken place throughout South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia and Florida. No one was hurt as a result of the robberies and no amount of money taken has been released.
