A busy week for the sheriff’s office

Sheriff Benny Deloach would like to report the following activity of the Appling County Sheriff’s Office.

July 14, answered a call to Midway Church Road in reference to a burglary. A complainant stated a subject broke into their residence and took several household items valued at $200.00. Investigation revealed Charlie Weston Smith, age 23, of Baxley, had taken the items. Warrants were taken and Smith was charged with theft.

July 16, answered a call to Sandy Road in reference to a theft. A complainant stated a subject was allowed to spend the night in their residence. Next morning subject was gone along with 42" Flat Screen T.V. and a Poulan chainsaw. Investigation revealed items were pawned. Wesley Bennett, age 26, of Baxley, was arrested and charged with theft by taking.

July 16, a complainant came to the sheriff’s office to report a stolen vehicle. The vehicle was stolen from complainant’s yard. Inside vehicle was complainant’s wallet. Vehicle was entered in GCIC. Investigation continues.

July 16, answered a call to Homesville Road in reference to a dispute. A complainant stated a subject has his motorcycle and will not return it because he owes him some money.

July 16, answered a call to Craven Road in reference to a possible suicide attempt. The subject stated pills taken were amounts prescribed. The subject was taken to Appling Emergency Room.

July 17, answered a call to Sellers Road in reference to damage to property. A complainant stated an unknown person drove a vehicle through a row of sunflowers planted in a field. The subject contacted the sheriff’s office and reported he had run off the road and ran in the above field. The subject was asked to contact complainant.

July 17, answered a call to Holt Rentz Road in reference to a theft. The complainant stated she moved from a residence. Later complainant realized she had left her wallet inside residence and when returning it was gone. The landlord stated there was no wallet left.

July 17, answered a call to Lake Mayers Road in reference to a theft. A complainant stated her son sold two of her vehicle’s valued at $3,200.00 to a subject without her permission. The vehicles were recovered and returned to the owner.

July 17, answered a call to Callaway Lane in reference to a theft. A complainant stated a family member took a Kawasaki Prairie 400 (4x4) without permission. Investigation continues.

July 17, answered a call to the emergency room in reference to a gun shot victim. The victim stated he was cleaning his gun and forgot to take the magazine out of the pistol.

July 18, answered a call to Fire Tower Road in reference to a domestic. Acquaintances were having a confrontation. No physical marks were noted.

July 18, answered a call to Cooper Road in reference to an assault. The subject reported that the victim ran to his vehicle for safety. The victim was then transported to the emergency room for treatment of injuries. Corey D. Rooks, age 23, of Baxley was arrested and charged with kidnapping, rape, and DUI.

July 19, answered a call to Gardenia Circle in reference to a theft. A complainant stated items taken from mobile home were valued at $520.00. The complainant also stated items were taken by family members without her permission.

July 19, answered a call to Ash Street in reference to a domestic. An estranged wife came to the residence of the complainant and tried to hit him with her vehicle. The offender had left the residence before officer arrived.

July 20, answered a call to Dyal School Road in reference to a theft. A complainant stated taken from his property were several farming equipment items valued at $1,500.00. Investigation continues.

July 21, answered a call to Ash Street in reference to a domestic. An ex-husband and a wife were having a confrontation over personal belongings.

July 21, answered a call to Sellers Road in reference to damage to property. A complainant stated an unknown person(s) damaged her shelter.

July 22, answered a call to Highway 144 in reference to a theft. Two subjects were caught in the act of taking items from property by owner. One of the subjects admitted to taking other items previously also. Fred Beecher, age 61, of Baxley, and James Albert Thomas, age 56, of Baxley, were both arrested and charged with theft by taking.

July 22, answered a call to McCloud Circle in reference to a theft. A complainant stated unknown person had stolen a digital camera valued at $300.00.

July 22, a suspicious vehicle was checked out at Village Mobile Home Park. The investigation revealed the vehicle was stolen from Miami. The owner was notified and did not want to press charges.

July 23, answered a call to Vernon Williams Road in reference to a domestic. A husband and a wife had a verbal dispute. The wife left the residence.

July 23, a complainant came to the sheriff’s office to report identity fraud. The complainant stated a subject used her name, social security number and birth date to obtain employment with a local farmer. Investigation continues.
