On July 2, at 5:40 p.m., Appling County 911 received a call in reference to a drowning at the Altamaha River near Plant Hatch. Witnesses stated to investigating officers that Johnny Ray Adams, a white male age 45, attempted to swim the river from the Toombs County side to the Appling County side and that Adams went under on the Appling County side and did not resurface.
Appling County and Toombs County EMA and the Appling County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team were dispatched to the scene. The search for Adams was ceased at dark with spotters with lights operating from the bank of the river. At approximately 6:30 a.m. on July 3, Adams was spotted and pulled from the river. The Appling County Coroner came to the river to conduct his death investigation.
