The following are highlights of incidents that were handled by members of the Baxley Police Department over the past several days.
On August 13 at approximately 11:41 a.m. officers were notified that there were two person(s) at a local motel that had outstanding warrants on them from the Hazlehurst Police Department. After officers received the information they went to the motel where they encountered both of the persons in question. After a brief encounter, one of them tried to elude officers to the point that the officer had to deploy his Taser to get the person to comply with his lawful command. After getting the person detained, officers received consent to search the immediate area. As a result of the search several items of drug paraphernalia was seized. Charged in connection with this incident was Misty Taylor, 37, of Hazlehurst, on one count possession of drug related objects and Angel Cherie Miles, 23, also of Hazlehurst, on one count obstruction of a police officer, along with the outstanding warrants from the Hazlehurst Police Department.
Multiple arrests made by Police Department
Aug. 13 at approx. 8:07 p.m., met with a complainant at an Anthony Street address in reference to a theft. On arrival the complainant told officers that he was missing several items of power tools. Reported missing was a 12-inch Dewalt brand miter saw, yellow and black in color, a Dewalt seven and a quarter inch skill saw, also yellow and black in color, a Makita brand jig saw, a Bostich trim nail-gun, and a Dewalt framing-gun.
Aug. 14 at approx. 1:00 p.m., responded to a Hopps Street address in reference to a cruelty to animals incident. On arrival officers observed a blue pit bulldog tied to a clothesline without shelter, food, or water, where it was noted by officers to be in a really bad state. Officers were unable to locate the owner and the dog was taken into protective custody and placed in the shelter, where it was provided shelter, food and water, but the dog’s condition was so bad that it was unable to stand or sit up and continued to just lie on its side, from being exposed to the elements way too long. Officers contacted a local vet about the dog’s condition and afterwards a warrant was issued charging Evelyn Alberta Barton, 31, of Baxley, for one count cruelty to animals. The dog died the next day as a result of the harsh conditions it was exposed to.
Aug. 17 at approx. 5:44 p.m., answered a call to Fred’s in reference to a theft. On arrival officers met with some employees who were standing outside the store with a person whom they had detained for taking some items without paying for them. The employees told officers that a second person had left prior to their arrival. After a brief investigation, Katy Rebecca Courson, 30, of Savannah, was taken into custody and once at the detention center, some drug paraphernalia was seized, which after being field-tested was positive for methamphetamine. Courson was charged in connection with this incident with one count each of theft by shoplifting, possession of a drug related object, possession of a controlled substance, and crossing guard lines with weapons, intoxicants or drugs without consent. Also charged was Kathryn Nicole Kirkland, 32, of Baxley, on one count theft by shoplifting.
Aug. 17 at approx. 7:53 p.m., met with a resident at a Greenbriers Circle address in reference to a burglary. On arrival the resident told officers that while she was away person(s) unknown entered her home and removed a 27-inch Emerson brand colored T.V. The T.V. was bearing a model number of LE220ME3, and serial number of ME1A1233299104. The T.V. was entered in the GCIC computer system as stolen.
Aug. 18 at approx. 4:56 a.m., met with a resident at a Holmesville Ave address in reference to a theft. On arrival the resident told officers that he was awaken when he heard a window being busted, and seen someone run past his window with a flashlight. The resident told officers he got up and went out to investigate what he had heard where he discovered that a person unknown had just busted out a window on his 2002 Ford truck and removed a firearm he had left inside it. The firearm is described as a Ruger SR9 brand pistol with serial number of 331-21117, and is black and silver in color. The firearm has been entered in the GCIC computer system as stolen.
Aug. 19 at 10:59 a.m., met with a complainant at a local convenience store in reference to a suspicious package. On arrival the complainant showed officers a package that had been delivered by a person with a note on it, which it was to be picked up by another person. After investigating the package officers discovered it to contain drugs. The package was seized and the person who delivered them who was still outside the store was detained. In just a few minutes the other person to whom the package was intended for was stopped a short distance from the store and detained. After further investigation, several different kinds of pills were confiscated along with a quantity of marijuana.
Charged in connection with this incident was Gary Jamar Brinkley, 40, of Hazlehurst, on one count of drugs not in original container, and Norman Thomas Clance, 40, also of Hazlehurst on one count of driving while license suspended, drugs not in original container,possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, and theft by receiving stolen property, which stemmed from him operating a 1998 Chevy 1500, blue in color pickup, that had been reported stolen earlier from Nahunta.
Aug. 19 at approx. 5:18 p.m., answered call to Wal-Mart in reference to a theft. On arrival officer met with the LPC officer whom had a person detained for taking an item without paying for it. Charged in connection with this incident was Sydney Woodard, 19, of Baxley, on one count theft by shoplifting.
Aug. 20 answered a call to a fight at a Luckie Street address. On arrival the person(s) unknown involved in the fight were leaving the residence, and one of the person’s was recognized by officers to have outstanding warrant on him. The officers attempted to stop the vehicle and it sped up to avoid them, which led officers, assisted by Appling County deputies on a chase that ended when the driver lost control of the vehicle and ran into a ditch at which time the driver fled the area on foot, only to be taken into custody the next morning by Appling County deputies. Charged in connection with this incident was Johnathan Wayne Boatright, 31, of Baxley, on one count fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, along with other charges from the Appling Co. Sheriff’s Office.
