The Baxley-Appling County Board of Tourism hosted their annual Altamaha River Rat Run Canoe Excursion on Saturday, June 4. It was a beautiful sunny morning with a slight breeze just right for canoeing. Despite the temperature (upper 90’s) 68 participants from all over Georgia (Alpharetta, Baxley, Blackshear, Brooklet, Brunswick, Byron, Cobbtown, Glennville, Hazlehurst, Jesup, Lizella, Lumber City, Macon, Mansfield, McRae, Mt. Vernon, Statesboro, Uvalda, Vidalia, Warner Robins, and Waycross) launched their canoes, kayaks, boats, and jet skis around 9:30 a.m. from the starting point of Deen’s Landing to make the 10-mile excursion to conclude at Davis Landing. This group consisted of both experienced and beginner paddlers. Many owned their own canoes and with the help of Altamaha Expeditions (owner Larry Brantley-Jesup) many were able to rent their canoes/kayaks.
This event also served as a “River/Landing Cleanup Event”. Garbage bags and gloves were available for those who registered for the event and who wanted to participate in the river cleanup as they paddled. The river level was low but the current was swift so it did not take the participants long to reach their desired destination.
The Board of Tourism extends a BIG thank you to Mrs. Mary Emma Davis for granting us permission to use Davis Landing for the event. We would also like to thank the Appling County Board of Education, The Baxley News-Banner, WBYZ, Appling County Commissioners, GA-DNR, Altamaha River Partnership, Southeastern Gin, Southern Metal Works, and for all the individuals/volunteers that made this event a huge success. The next paddle on the Altamaha River will be the Altamaha River Fall Canoe Paddle on Saturday, September 24. This excursion will be a “Memorial Paddle” in memory of “Linda Coleman Carson” and will start at Davis Landing and conclude at Carter’s Bight Landing.
