Deward Gerrell Elkins, 63, of Hazlehurst, died Friday, June 3, 2011. Mr. Elkins was born in Hazlehurst. He was the son of the late Deward Erastus Elkins and Janet Ruth Cobb Elkins. Mr. Elkins was a veteran of the United States Marines and was wounded in action twice in Vietnam. He received a Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts. Mr. Elkins was the owner/operator of Gerrell Elkins Cabinets. He was preceded in death by a son, Chad Elkins.
Survivors include his wife, Theresa Hutchinson Elkins of Hazlehurst; children Christy Deems and Kim Elkins of Douglas, Derrick Elkins (Cathy) of Appling and Stephanie Swinson (Jim) of Savannah; sisters, Brenda Calhoun (Richard) of Hazlehurst, Melba Smith of Blackshear, Denise Lott of Douglas and Shari Sandford of Hazlehurst; two grandchildren, Cody Rollins and Baylee Rollins, and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 6 from Bridgeford Church of God with the Rev. Jack Chaney, the Rev. Tyrone Hutchinson and the Rev. Mark Carver officiating. Burial followed in Bridgeford Church of God Cemetery with Military honors.
Active pallbearers were George Tucker, Pacer Joiner, Ronnie McNeal, Jerry Ussery, Jack Taylor and Phil Merritt.
Honorary pallbearers were Joe Miller, Danny Coley, Fred Smith, Wayne Kirkland and Bobby Kirkland.
Musical selections were rendered by Janet Burns Allen, Danny Burns, Van Rentz and Randy Rentz.
Arrangements were under the direction of Miles Funeral Home in Hazlehurst.
