Arrest made after car chase through Baxley
Baxley Chief Police James Godfrey reported that on Feb. 8 at approximately 2:10 a.m., while officers were patrolling an area they spotted a person who they had been looking for in connection with recent thefts. The person was operating a 1998 Ford Explorer, black in color, and was leaving from a MLK Avenue address. Officers turned on the blue lights and siren to affect a traffic stop. The person in question stopped for the officers and then sped off, leading them on a chase through the city limits, disregarding officers and numerous stop signs, until the person lost control of the truck, coming to a rest in a plowed field near Merrell Miles Road. The person then attempted to flee on foot from the officers only to be captured a short distance from the truck. The person/offender was taken into custody without further incident.
After further investigation it was revealed that the vehicle the offender was operating had just been stolen form the address on MLK Ave. Arrested in connection with these numerous thefts was Yoandys Chavez, 28, of a Baxley address, on the following charges: four counts theft by taking motor vehicles, five counts burglary in the second degree, three counts theft by taking, one count fleeing or attempting to elude police officer, and one count criminal trespass. Chief Godfrey says that as the investigation continues, more charges will be forth coming, along with more charges pending from the Appling County Sheriff’s Office.
Car theft incidents reported by police department
Feb. 7 at approx. 11:40 p.m., met with a resident at a Page Street address in reference to a theft. On arrival the officers told the resident that his 2007 Chevy Colorado had been found abandoned on O’Berry Lane by a deputy. The resident told officers the last time he saw the truck it was parked in his yard. The truck was seized and placed in the police impound yard pending further processing for latent prints.
Jan. 22 at approx. 12:24, met with a complainant at a Tippins Street address in reference to a theft. On arrival the complainant told officers that he had been gone for approximately two weeks and when he returned he discovered that person(s) unknown had stolen his 1992 GMC Sonoma truck that was parked in his yard. The truck is described as being black in color, and had a current Florida plate of 4147BV. A search of the area was conducted to no avail, along with a lookout being broadcast to other units and surrounding counties. The truck has been entered on the GCIC computer network as stolen.
Feb. 6 at approx. 7:26 a.m., met with a resident at a 2nd Street address in reference to a theft. On arrival the resident told officers that sometime during the night person(s) unknown had removed his 2005 GMC Yukon Denali, blue/green in color. A search of the area was to no avail in locating the missing truck. A local and area broadcast was posted to other units and surrounding counties to be on the lookout. The Yukon was entered on the GCIC computer network as stolen. A few hours’ later officers discovered the missing vehicle at a residence on Tippins Street bogged down in the side yard. The vehicle was seized and placed in the police impound for further processing.
Feb. 6 at approx. 6:38 a.m., met with the resident at a Lawanna Drive address in reference to a theft by receiving. On arrival the officers discovered a 2004 Chevrolet Aveo abandoned. The Aveo had been reported stolen earlier from a residence on Chad Claxton Street. The stolen Aveo was seized and placed into the police impound yard pending further processing for latent prints.

Jan. 21 at approximately 4:28 p.m., met with a resident at a Brobston Street address in reference to a burglary. On arrival the resident told officers that while she was gone person(s) unknown entered her home and removed some clothing items. After an investigation Casey Marionneaux, 29, of Baxley, was charged with one count burglary in the first degree in connection with this burglary.
Jan. 24 at approx. 10:15 a.m., answered a call to Wal-Mart in reference to a theft. On arrival the LPC officer told officers that they had discovered an inside theft that had already occurred. After further investigation Tekia Russell, 31, of Baxley, was charged with one count theft by deception in connection with this incident.
Jan. 27 at approx. 1:38 p.m., met with a complainant at the Petro store in reference to a person attempting to pass a stolen check. On arrival the clerk related to officers that a person had entered the store and attempted to pass a check that was reported stolen from an earlier auto theft incident. After further investigation Barbara Tomberlin, 31, of Baxley, was charged with one count each of possession of a drug related object and theft by receiving stolen property.
Jan. 28 at approx. 1:06 a.m., met with a resident at a Colonial Drive address in reference to a burglary. On arrival the resident told officers that an ex-acquaintance had come to his home, beating on the door, and then after he wouldn’t open the door, she finally left. The resident told officers that upon the person leaving he went outside and checked on his vehicle, and discovered a 10-inch RCA tablet missing.
Jan. 28 at approx. 9:30 p.m., met with a complainant at a Highland Drive address in reference to a burglary. On arrival the complainant told officers that sometime during the night person(s) unknown entered her vehicle, a blue Nissan Versa that was parked in the drive and removed her wallet that contained assorted papers and other personal informational items.
Jan. 29 at approx. 5:00 p.m., met with a complainant at the U-Store U-Lock building in reference to a burglary. On arrival the complainant told officers that three units had been broken into and the following items were reported missing: two Dell computers, one Wizard weed eater, one metal truck toolbox with assorted tools, one metal washtub, one Dell P.C., one Craftsman shop vac. and one toolbox.
Jan. 30 at approx. 4:17 p.m., met with a complainant at Chandler’s in reference to a theft. On arrival the complainant told officers that two persons had come into the store and tried on some clothing items. When they left the complainant noticed a pair of jeans missing. After an investigation, Ayla Lynn Morton, 26, of Baxley, was charged with one count theft by shoplifting in connection with this incident.
Jan. 30 at approx. 10:34 p.m., met with a resident at a Tollison Street address in reference to a burglary. On arrival the resident told officers that sometime during the night person(s) unknown entered her 2006 Chevrolet Suburban that was parked in the yard and removed her purse. The purse is described as being teal in color, with tan stripes and diamonds on it. The purse contained assorted papers and other personal informational items.
Jan. 31 at approx. 1:27 p.m., met with a resident at a Carter Street address in reference to a burglary. On arrival the resident told officers that person(s) unknown had busted out a small window on his 1998 Ford Mustang that was parked in the yard and removed a CD player.
Jan. 31 at approx. 3:14 p.m., met with a complainant at a Village Mobile Home Park address in reference to a theft. On arrival the complainant told officers that person(s) unknown had stolen one of his pit bull puppies. The puppy is described as a red nose pit bulldog, and has a white stripe down the center of its face and a rusty red color body. The puppy is approximately eight weeks old.
Feb. 2 at approx. 12:23, met with a resident at a Lackawanna Street address in reference to a burglary. On arrival the resident told officers that sometime during the night person(s) unknown entered his 2007 Suzuki XL and removed a pocket-sized Buck knife. The knife was approximately four inches long, had brass ends and centered by dark wooded handles.
Feb. 2 at approx. 10:10 a.m., met with a complainant at the Baxley Housing Authority in reference to a theft. On arrival the complainant told officers that sometime during the night person(s) unknown came on city property and removed a 2007 homemade trailer, black in color, and had a current Georgia plate of TL5432T. After reviewing surveillance footage a gold or tan looking Chevrolet Trail Blazer was seen with two or more persons hooking up to the trailer and leaving with it. The video footage has been forwarded to another agency to enhance the footage. Anyone who has any knowledge of this incident is urged to contact the Baxley Police Department.
Feb. 3 at approx. 5:39 p.m., met with a resident at a Pendleton Street address in reference to a burglary. On arrival the resident told officers that sometime during the night person(s) unknown had entered her 2010 Cadillac Escalade, and removed two wallets, containing personal papers, along with other informational papers, including a pair of sunglasses and an undetermined amount of currency.
Feb. 6 at approx. 7:19 a.m., met with a resident at a 2nd Street address in reference to a burglary. On arrival the resident told officers that sometime during the night person(s) unknown had entered three vehicles that were parked at his home. Entered was, a red in color, 2007 Ford Explorer, in which a Carhartt brand jacket was stolen, also entered was a white in color, Cadillac Escalade, in which a wallet with identification papers and other informational items were taken, and a white in color, Ford Expedition, in which an undetermined amount of change was taken. Another vehicle, a white in color, 2004 Ford F150, received an amount of damage in attempts to gain entry.
Feb. 6 at approx. 3:04 p.m., answered a call to a Mauldin Street address in reference to a theft. On arrival the complainant told officers that sometime during the night person(s) unknown stole her black and blue Wipe Out brand bicycle from her residence.
Feb. 7 at approx. 1:09 p.m., met with a complainant in reference to some found stolen property. The complainant met with the officers and turned over four credit cards that he had found. The cards had been reported taken in one of the previous burglaries and theft.
Feb. 7 at approx. 9:37 p.m., answered a call to a Pines Trailer Park address in reference to a fight. On arrival officers met with a complainant who told them she had gotten into an argument with an acquaintance, but he had already left the scene before they arrived. A short while later officers received another call to the same address, that the acquaintance had returned and there was another argument that turned into a physical confrontation, to the complainant being assaulted and needing medical attention. On arrival officers discovered that the complainant had gotten into an argument and it turned physical with the same acquaintance, at which time she received two puncture wounds to her back where the acquaintance had stabbed her. The acquaintance was gone on the officer’s arrival. The EMS was summoned to the scene where the complainant was treated and transported to Appling HealthCare for her injuries she sustained during the altercation. A short search of the area produced the offender/acquaintance at which time he attempted to flee only to be caught and taken into custody by the officers. After getting the offender into custody EMS had to be called to check him out due to his injuries sustained during the physical altercation with the complainant. Arrested in connection with this incident was Ignacio E. Ramirez, 24, of Baxley, on charges of one count each of aggravated battery, aggravated assault, simple battery, obstruction of a police officer and giving false name.
Feb. 9 at approx. 7:12 p.m., met with a complainant at a Lawanna Drive address in reference to a theft. On arrival the complainant told officers that her brother had took her 2010 Dodge Challenger without her permission. Officers discovered that this was the same vehicle that was involved in a high-speed chase with Wayne County authorities and the Appling County authorities in which the driver was taken into custody after he had been involved in an accident in his attempts to elude police officers. Charged in connection with the theft was Vernard Jericho Pearsey, 41, of Baxley, on one count theft by taking motor vehicle.
Feb. 11 at approx. 1:30 p.m., met with a complainant at a Floyd Street address in reference to an abandoned vehicle at his rental property. On arrival and after an investigation the abandoned vehicle was discovered to have been reported stolen from a local residents in Appling County. The vehicle, a green in color, Lincoln Navigator, was recovered and later released to Appling County investigators for further processing and investigation.
