The Baxley Exchange Club and the National Exchange Club believe that volunteer efforts are very important to society and should not go unnoticed. The National Exchange Club’s longest running project, the Book of Golden Deeds Award, recognizes dedicated volunteers who give endless hours of their time and talents toward making their communities better places to live. Ever since the Exchange Club of Huntington, Ind., sponsored the first award in 1919, thousands of unsung heroes and heroines have been recognized.
On Thursday, June 2, the Baxley Exchange Club honored Dawn Melton by presenting her with the Book of Golden Deeds Award.
Melton is a public health and physical education teacher with the Appling County School System and has served in this capacity for the past 29 years at Fourth District Elementary School. Among the many accomplishments during her career, she has been named Teacher of the Year (Fourth District - 2003 - 2004), conducts the annual Jump Rope For Heart at Fourth District (exceeding $10,000.00 in donations a number of years), and was nominated as the Baxley/Appling County Citizen of the Year for 2011.
Giving to her community is another area in which Dawn has went above and beyond. In 1983 Dawn organized the first-ever Fall Fitness Run in Appling County. For 28 consecutive years she has held the event on the third Saturday of November attracting as many as 325 participants annually. The money raised from this event is used as a fundraiser for Fourth District Elementary.
Dawn is married to Mark Melton and they one daughter, Marley. She is the daughter of Virgil and Betty Carter of Baxley.
