Kenley Lamb, the district essay contest winner read her winning essay (If I Were Mayor, I would...) before the council at the regular city council meeting May 24. Mayor Steve Rigdon announced that Kenley went on to state with her winning essay. He further stated Kenley was honored with a luncheon at the 755 Club at Turner Field in Atlanta. The mayor treated Kenley and her guests with a ride in a limousine to Turner Field. Kenley’s mother and grandmother accompanied her at the city council meeting. The mayor reported that there were 6,000 applicants submitted and Kenley was one of the top 12 in the state. The mayor and city manager commended Kenley for her immense accomplishment.

New business
The council had discussions for possible approval for a proposal to remove sludge from the aeration basin at the Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP). Following the manager’s and the council members deliberations, Dr. Esco Hall made a motion to approve the manager’s recommendation to negotiate the best price for this project. The manager announced that the funds would come from the Renewal Extension funds for water and sewer and not from the general budget. Councilman Tim Varnadore made a second and the item was approved unanimously.
Manager Jeff Baxley announced that there is no water and sewer on south side of Highway 341 West and anticipates the need for it in this area for future growth. Consideration and discussions then followed regarding the need for water and sewer. The manager made a recommendation to authorize him to get bids for this project. He also stated the water and sewer would be bid together. The funds for this project will come from the Renewal Extension fund as well. The council approved the recommendation.
Baxley announced there would be some significant changes concerning the health insurance and these changes would save money and would take place June 1.
